Turning off WPA & WPS for DIR-850L B1
« on: April 27, 2016, 10:45:10 AM »

Hi
I'm from Singapore and just got a DIR-850L router.
Hardware version: B1
Firmware version: 2.06

How can I change the wireless security settings to WPA2-AES only?
Right now, using the "Wifi Analyzer" app from Google Play, all options are available from my router: WPA/WPA2, TKIP/AES, WPS

From my manual (pg100 on pdf file, pg96 on paper),
http://d2okd4tdjucp2n.cloudfront.net/DIR-850L/DIR-850L_B1_Manual_v2.00%28DI%29.pdf
The only "Security Mode" options are "None", "WEP", or "WPA/WPA2-(Personal)"
I can't choose WPA2 only. I have to choose both WPA/WPA2 together.

Interestingly, older hardware version A1 has a "Wireless Security Mode" option, (pg58 on pdf file, pg54 on paper)
http://d2okd4tdjucp2n.cloudfront.net/DIR-850L/DIR-850L_A1_Manual_v1.00%28DI%29.pdf
It allows you to select WPA or WPA2. It also allows you to select TKIP or AES

So how can I turn off WPA, TKIP, WPS for my router? I only want the highest security: WPA2-AES

Thanks for any help!

Link>Welcome!

Do you have a menu selection for single mode only? Try setting single mode N.
Auto should work however if you have devices that are not supporting of AES then this may be causing the router to use a lesser mode instead of AES. D-Link changed the handling of the security mode in the newer UI. They didn't included selecting WPA2 only for unknown reasons as seen in Rev A models with the older UI.

Do you mean setting the 802.11 mode?

Yep, I had already set 2.4Ghz to 'n' only, and 5Ghz to 'ac' only.
And "Wifi Analyzer" tells me the router is still broadcasting all options: WPS, WPA/WPA2, TKIP/AES.

Seems strange that they would remove the option completely from the new UI. It would have been better to put the option in some "Advanced Users" page, while the general public would use the simpler UI.

My previous router, a D-link DCM-604 from 7 years ago (which this DIR-850L is replacing) gave me full control of the security settings.

Thanks for your reply anyway!

Depending on your analyzer and what the router is doing, it maybe reporting what the router support rather than what is actually being broadcast. I presume that Auto on the router means that all modes are supported. With newer generation router, some Mfrs are using Auto so that there is better compatibility with older generation devices and to be more compliant with wifi standards.

Good Luck.

The "Wifi Analyzer" app should be reporting what the router is broadcasting.
I used it on my old DCM-604 router, and it reported only WPA2-CCMP, after I switched all other options off.

Cheers!

You might try a different app to be sure and compare.
I presume that forcing WPA2 on newer generation routers may not be supported and handled by the AUTO function.  ::)

What was the result of this? Is there an option to select "WPA2 only"?

For Rev B, it's Auto WPA I believe.
