DIR-600L keeps losing connection
« on: December 13, 2012, 09:26:42 AM »

I just bought DIR-600L.  Hardware Version: Ax.  Firmware version 1.00.  It's South East Asia version.
I also have the older DIR-600 Rev. B1 which seems very stable.
The problem with this router, is that I keep losing internet connection despite it says "Connected".  Sometimes it takes 2 hours, something every 3 hours or so.
The status shows "Connected", but I can not browse to the internet.   I have to disconnect & reconnect  the wifi to get working connection.  I don't have to reset the router itself though !
Sometimes, suddenly the connection status changed to "Limited Connection" and I lose the internet.
Sometimes, it changed to "Limited Connection" temporarily, but regain connection to "Connected" after several seconds.

Signal reception is excellent...full bar.
The distance between the router & my laptop is only 6 feet away !!!
The 2.4 GHz channel seems far from crowded with only 9-10 SSID across 13 channels, and only 1-2 users collide in the channel usage.

I see, there is not yet newer firmware for my router.
Is there any suggestion ?

What region are you located?
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
Has a Factory Reset been performed?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
Double NAT
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.
Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask.

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.
WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

Just got a reply from support tech, but he didn't answer my question yet, except asking where I bought this router with firmware 1.00, so I replied.  He also told me that the latest firmware is 1.13.
So, I flashed to 1.13.   Same thing. The traffic control rule is not functional.
I chose this over Axxx RT-N10+ because the traffic control rule works in my old DIR-600 & the experience is good.

Notice of new firmware by mydlink event management does't work.
Instead, the new firmware greets me  in Italian for the first setup page, just like reported by many users across regions. I have flashed with the correct firmware for South East Asia version.
Can't go back to firmware 1.00 because it's not available anywhere.

I would now phone contact DLink support and talk to them about FW v1.13. I presume there is an issue with it and should not be used. Your unit probably should be RMAd.

Let us know how it goes.

All my problem (except language problem) is solved.

I didn't uncheck the "Automatic Distribute Bandwidth", so the traffic control rules becomes disabled.
I definitely didn't read careful enough every option there.
It's my bad.  My apology if I confuse everyone here.

Thats helpful information. This helps us to see how to enable Traffic Control enabled with disabling Automatic Distribute Bandwidth.

Thank you and enjoy.

I have found the solution for this problem on DIR-600L that I have been facing for many months and couldn't find solution anywhere so figured out myself. Solution simply lies in updating system time (which was 1970 someting) to current time. To do this you need to type 192.168.0.1 >login> Maintenance> Time and Date> Click on "Get GMT Time" > Apply . that's it and no more connection drops  ;D

Thanks for posting your solution however the OP problem was in the QoS settings of the router and was resolved by changing those settings.

Will keep this in mind for any other future references and hope it helps future users as well.

Thank you.
