DLink 2750B router & DirecTV & Internet connection problem
« on: November 20, 2012, 01:46:57 PM »

I have a DLink 2750B router, Samsung SmartTV (UN46ES6580F) and a Belkin N750 Wi-Fi USB adapter. Every time I try to connect my DirecTV receiver (Hr24/500) to the Internet, I can't get any further than trying to enter my security key. It will not accept it. Verizon says it's DirecTV and DirecTV says it's Verizon. DirecTV did say that my firewall protection was perhaps set "too high," which they say happens with gateways that have phone connections. Being new to all this, I don't quite understand the technology so, before I return my router and try a new one, does anyone have any suggestions? I already tried changing from WPA2 to WEP and that did not work. DirecTV said something about opening ports through the firewall -- something I can't do and Verizon says they can't. By the way, I'm using Norton Internet Security.

What region are you located?
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router when the TV, Belkin USB adapter and DirecTV?

Check to see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the DirecTV unit gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Try disabling the Firewall as a short term test to see if this effect any thing.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.

Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

Enable WMM Enable if you have this option

urn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.

Sorry it took so long for me to respond. I'm new at this and it took me a long time to figure out how to do all the things you told me to try.

I'm located in MD and am trying to connect wirelessly to the router.

I tried changing DMZ option with DirecTV IP address (169.254.7.78) but got the message "does not belong to any recognized LAN."

TCP/IPv6 and 4 are set to obtain IP addresses automatically.

I tried your suggestions: mode G, then N, channel width for Auto 20/40Mhz, then 20Mhz only. Tried setting manual channel 11 for mode N. Nothing worked.

Security mode I'm using is WPA2/AES, which is the only option I have (no TPIK only or AUTO).

As for other wifi in the area, I think the Samsung TV has what's called a wi-fi Direct but I have no control over that, I don't think. The TV's IP address is 192.168.1.1, as well as the Gateway and DNS server. Could this be a problem?

I turned off Norton Internet Security but that didn't seem to make  difference.

After spending many hours on the phone with DirecTV and Verizon, it was suggested that my firewall is the problem. DirecTV said I should open ports (either 8088, 8843 or 1701) through the firewall. Don't know how to do that, any other suggestions?

Need to find out what the wireless device supports in regards to TPIK and AES, some do not support AES so TPIK would be the next option. IF this is the case and the DSL modem does not have TPIK options available, I would suggest you possibly get a D-Link DAP model AP which most have TPIK options available along with AES. Turn OFF the wireless on the DSL modem and use the DAP as your wireless AP.
