extreme static noise
« on: April 30, 2014, 09:56:27 AM »

please check the static noise:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2t0LA5MTsg
the sound detection showed that the sound exceeded 90 dB
i just bought it and it was OK in the first day.

i have tried :
1. tried all fw 1.01, 1.02, 1.03
2. reset to factory defaults
3. tried every electrical socket
4. tried the lowest h.264 bandwidth.
5. turn off extender mode

any ideas?

Did you try moving the camera to a different room to rule out other environmental interference?

The sound you posted kind of sounds like the whirring heard through the live feed when the pan/tilt motor is in motion. Do you feel a vibration from the camera that would indicate that the motor doing something? Also, try putting your ear to the surface of the camera and listen for a noise.

the pan tilt motor wasn't moving. i also tried sticking my ear to it. no internal sound..
the pan tilt motor won't have a 90-100dB i suppose..

the noise happens either with day or IR mode.

have tried in 4 rooms. including the first room where it is OK in the first day.

the static also happens in PC (web utility, and mydlink.com) and also smartphone (android)

Key question I forgot to ask!!! Do you hear the sound through the web UI or in person? If the camera itself is humming and you can hear it while in the same room, then that would indicate a possible hardware issue.

thru the Web UI, mydlink.com, smartphone UI.
no humming from the camera.
the static noise is present with the same amount of dB whether I set the volume to 10 or 100.
if i set the volume to zero. no static noise is heard (quite obvious  :-\)

One last test. If the camera is set to wireless, then try physically connecting the camera to your router via a wired connection. Short of this working, it sounds like (no pun intended) there is a hardware issue and you should request a replacement.

Short of some environmental interference that's pervading your whole home, the only reasonable cause is that I can think of is a hardware defect.

If you want to absolutely rule out interference, test your camera in a different building. Short of that, I would say something is wrong with the hardware. I own a DCS-5020L and that noise is not normal. There are no web UI settings that can cause the sound either.

Should you need to return the camera (and since the camera is new), I suggest going through your original vendor to avoid any shipping charges. If you go through D-Link, the D-Link RMA process requires you to pay postage for returning your defective device. . . so it's best to go with the original vendor, if possible, to avoid the return shipping.

Please post back after you've completed your testing or returned your device for a replacement.

update:
i move it around (plug it on off from the electricity in the process) and now the static is suddenly gone.

really really confusing..

You've got a mystery on your hands. If there's no cost for swapping out the unit for a new camera, then you can rule out the hardware simply enough. Otherwise, you'll have to wait and see if the issue recurs.
