Title: DNS Relay questions.
Post by: DCIFRTHS on September 06, 2008, 02:41:59 AM
While DNS realy is enabled:

1) Does the router cache DNS information?
2) Where is the DNS server address obtained from?

From the DIR-655 help page:

Quote
DNS Relay
When DNS Relay is enabled, the router plays the role of a DNS server. DNS requests sent to the router are forwarded to the ISP's DNS server. This provides a constant DNS address that LAN computers can use, even when the router obtains a different DNS server address from the ISP upon re-establishing the WAN connection. You should disable DNS relay if you implement a LAN-side DNS server as a virtual server.

This makes sense to me until the statement that reads:

Quote
...even when the router obtains a different DNS server address from the ISP upon re-establishing the WAN connection.

Can someone explain what the quote above means?

Thanks!

Sometimes your ISP will changing IP schemes, this can make a new IP address for its DNS server.  Your PC won't care about this as it will look to the router for DNS info and the router will take care of where to send the information request.
