DNS 343 problem with Seagate 2GB ST2000DM001
« on: April 08, 2012, 08:08:12 AM »

Hi,

I just bought DNS343 with 3x Seagate ST2000DM001 2GB.

It hang countless times as below while formating:
1) Raid5 on 3 HDD
2) Non-Raid on 3 HDD
3) Non-Raid on 1 HDD at a time

I understand that Seagate ST2000DM001 is using smart align technology.

I tried upgrade firmware 1.04 to 1.05b3 (http://tsd.dlink.com.tw/downloads2008detail.asp)

Any help? Tks!

It hangs with fw 1.04 or 1.05 (or both)?

I am having the same issue.

I just bought a new ST2000DM001 2GB and have spent the better part of the last 2 days trying to format it.

It will replace a 500Gb drive in slot 3 on standard configuration (no RAID), so I have:

- Removed all drives, and placed the new drive in slot 1 for formatting.

- Drive formatting hangs at seemingly random percentages. e.g. 24%, 44%, 50%, 64%

- Have left overnight to see if it chugs through it, but no difference made.

- Fans seem to stop when it hangs.

- Have formatted connected to computer (win7), in both NTFS and EXT3 with no issues.

- Firmware is 1.05

Anything I am doing wrong?

Mount the HDD on a Windows PC and delete all existing partitions, then try formatting again in the DNS-343.

Tried doing that.

Also tried formatting both NTFS and EXT3 (using Easeus Partition Master) on the computer, then formatting in the DNS343. Highest i have gotten now is 84%. Its getting higher after about 30-40 go's at it.

It looks like DNS-323 owners are experiencing a similar issue. The DNS-323 and DNS-343 were released around the same time and should deal with HDD formatting very similarly: DNS-323» 2TB Seagate ST2000DM001 Drive issue

I too am having issues getting my new (to me) DNS 343 (v1.5 firmware) to play nice with the 4 Seagate ST2000DM001 harddrives I bought for it. My other 343 has worked like a charm from day one, but then again it's not running with AF drives.

If I try and format as RAID 5 it's hit or miss. When it does work it seems to format okay but upon rebooting it goes into degraded mode, and sees one or more drives as new and wants to rebuild the array. If I then try to format that drive(s) the system hangs.
If I try and format as RAID 1, it seems to go okay until the reboot. After the reboot it again goes into degraded mode and sees one or more drives as new and wants to format it.

One other odd thing I've noticed is the "save settings", "don't save settings",and "refresh" boxes are greyed out under the Advanced/UPnP AV Server, the Advanced/iTunes Server, and the maintenance/power management tabs. I cannot save any changes I try to make under those tabs.

The issues you are having with saving should be independent of any installed HDDs. You might want to try setting the DNS-343 to the factory default settings and then re-upload firmware v1.05 and see if that corrects the issue.  :-\

I have applied all the suggestions and after MUCH trial and error I have learned some things and even discovered a work around to get my 343 partially functional.

1 - The "save settings / don't save settings / etc." buttons stay grayed out (see my post above) until there is a valid volume on a formatted drive. I was under the assumption they should be available as soon as a drive is installed. Apparently not so.

2 - the DNS 343 has issues with Seagate ST2000DM001 Advanced Format hard drives. At least mine does (DNS 343, B1, firmware 1.05, 4 x ST2000DM001 drives)
Neither RAID 5 nor RAID 1 work correctly. Even if I'm able to get the drives formatted without hanging, upon reboot the 343 loses a drive, then wants to re-sync / reformat the lost drive. Leaving me waiting (potentially) days for it to sync.

3 - Standard mode works as advertised after I discovered a work around. You have to jump through some hoops but it does work. If you try and format all 4 drives at once from the web UI, the process hangs and fails to finish. To get around this problem I did the following :

1 - Power up the 343 and set the OLED screen stay-on time to 15 minutes then turn off the device.
2 - Install one ST2000DM001 hard drive - unformatted or formatted as something other than EXT 2 or 3.
3 - Power up and log into the configuration utility.
4 - Format the drive. ***This is where things get funky.***

Follow the prompts to the initialization page. The web UI will hang / crash at 0% done. Not to worry. The 343 is formatting the drive in the background. Only the web UI has crashed. Use the "next" button on the front of the 343 to monitor it's progress. This is why we set it to 15 minutes in step 1.

5 - Once at 100% formatted, give it another 10 minutes to finish up any unseen background processes.
6 - Turn off the device by holding down the power button (If you re-start the 343 at this point you will have a shiny new volume to play with).
7 - Repeat steps 2 through 6 for every additional drive you want to install.

While not elegant, it did work for me.

I am not terribly happy that I had to spend a ton of time and energy to get this thing working (marginally) when my other 343 (also B1, v1.04, and 4 x ST2000DL003 drives) worked properly from day one. The fact that it does work suggests that it is a firmware rather than hardware problem. I'm hoping that D-Link put a bit more work into the firmware to get these drives fully compatible since Seagate is a huge HD player, and AF drives are the future. Like it or not.

Hi
DNS-343 Firmware 1.5, 4 x ST2000DM001 in Raid 5
I can format the disk pack no problem, once formatted things look normal till drives go to hibernate or NAS gets rebooted after which random drive drop-outs occur...

I have since bought new DNS-345 replacing DNS0343 and have no further problems like the one described above. The DNS-343 runs just fine with older ST31000528AS.
