If you disable uPnP, do you get a clean result?

I'll check this on my 857 on this side of the pond water when I get a chance.

Hi,

Yes, if I turn off the PnP service I get a clean result.

I can't give you a direct link to the GRC test because of the way the website functions.  You need to do the following:

1) point your browser at https://www.grc.com
2) go to the "services" menu
3) click on "shields up!"
4) click the "proceed" button in the middle of the page
4) when the page loads you will see the uPnP clickable hot-spot in the middle of the page

For Rapid7 you can use this direct link:

http://upnp-check.rapid7.com/

I think it was the researchers at rapid 7 that first published widely on this vulnerability after work done in the second half of 2012.

Cheers,

Ok, I can confirm with my 857 that it also fails these 2 tests. I tested with a DIR-826L and it passes.
I'll forward this on to my contact at D-Link and see what happens.

Well, this at least is consistent to my information that the NA update doesn't fix this security whole....    :-\

Thanks for following up on this, it would be nice to use uPnP on the LAN if they can patch the firmware.  If they don't, I'll need to replace it - discovery of a few devices on my LAN is not practically possible without it.  At least for some of my family that don't care for hacking around day-to-day.

Cheers,

I have been using uPnP enabled and have not been effected by any problems with this security issue. It's up to you however, I would run uPnP unless you have noticed problems with it. If your needing uPnP enabled and need to feel safe about it, then I recommend that you return the 857 and get into something that is not effected by this problem. Not sure when this will be addressed by D-Link. I'll post any information if I get any.

Good Luck.

Hello
1. I would like to have more configuration options for the Media Server. Currently the router fails to see entire content of my WD 1TB My-Book disk. A possibility to create categories (movies/pictures/music...) and specify folders to be included and scanned for content would be great. This way there will be no need to scan entire disk content to know what media there is. This could be inconvenient if you constantly switch the USB devices attached, but of course it could be done smarter - each new device to be fully indexed for example.. I used several Media Servers on my PC (as Plex or Servio) and they have this kind of control over the streamed media.

2. Movies in MKV format support of course

About the "bugs"/problems I experience I'll write in the other topics
