Author Topic: This creates a NEW wifi network (does not *extend* my current one)  (Read 5774 times)

Just bought the DAP-1320.  A real pain in the butt to connect (using WPS) but after different variations of pressing the button on my router first, then on the 1320, both at same time, 1320 first, using WPS detection through admin panel on my router, etc, etc, etc, I finally got the 1320 broadcasting a wifi signal.

BUT.. .it uses it's own wifi network (called DAP-1320).

Which is pretty much useless, as it means people need to keep switching between networks (my router, and the 1320) if the move around from room to room, selecting which one has the best signal strength.

My plan was NOT to create a new wifi network with strong signal strength at the one end of the house that has poor signal strength from my wifi router, but the *EXTEND* my CURRENT wifi network, so people could use their devices on a signal (ie: my current) wifi network.

Is this how the DAP-1320 actually works?  By just creating a brand new wifi network that transmits/receives where you plug it in?  I've got a wired (CAT5E) connection at the part of the house that has terrible wifi signal from my router, so instead of using the DAP-1320, it would be just as easy for me to return it to the store and plug in one of my old wifi routers in that room and just make a new wifi network (which it seem is what the DAP-1320 does).

Am I doing something wrong here?

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under the router case.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Have you tried setting up the DAP after a factory reset with a wired PC connected to the DAP and use the onboard wizard to help you connect the DAP to the main host router? This would be a preferred method to set up the DAP. Just have it connect to the main host routers SSID and PW.

A wired PC?  There's no ports on the DAP to connect a wired PC in to.

The router is an Arris TG1672 (my cable company replaced my nice Netgear router with this one in order to get Tivo connected throughout the house). It has WPS.

ps. I can NOT connect to http://dlinkap.local./ or http://dlink1073.local./ as my card states, even when I'm wirelessly connected to the DAP.  Just says 'page not found'.  At first when I was setting it up I managed to connect once.  Since then it's just been 'page not found'. So I can't even get into the DAPs admin pages.

If you setup up tge DAP using the user manual instructions the Either thus is a configuration issue or the unit could be faulty. I recommend that yiu phone contact D-Link support and have them help you verify the unit as wirking. We find that using phone vs email has more immediate results.

It is infact a seperate wireless signal from that of the router (how could it not be). Using my router as the (wireless) source in to the DAP-1320, I have my 1320 configured with the same SID/password as my router. Only issue is if I am on VPN and I (auto) switch between the router and the 1320, the VPN drops due to the pc obtaining a new ip address at the time of the switch.

Note: The DAP-1360 works on the same concept, seperate wireless signal from the router, same results as above (but with 1 ethernet port for set-up use). Moderator must have gotten them mixed up.

I have both (as well as a DIR-505 travel router, DAP-1522 Bridge, and a DPR-1260 Print Server) all working...

AAah... when I bought it I was of the understanding that it just 'rebroadcast' any current wifi signal from my router.  I thought maybe I'd plug in the DAP, go to a setup page entering my router's wifi password, and it would just rebroadcast signals back and forth between devices and the router.  Thus, all being the same network.  Ok, we'll just have to switch back and forth between wifi networks depending on which one has the best signal in the room we're in.
