WiFi dropping when Smart Connect is off
« on: December 17, 2018, 06:38:30 AM »

I'm currently facing a very odd issue with my DIR 878 router.

When Smart Connect setting is on, everything works fine and NO connection drops happen.

However, when I turn Smart Connect off and set both networks (2.4G e 5G) to have the same SSID, after one or two hours all my phones get disconnected. So I have to type the password again in order to connect.

The problem does not seem to be with the device as all of them get disconnected at same time (Three iPhones).

My router is currently in the latest firmware v1.12 and located in a well ventiled, centered and high position. The signal strenght is optimal so I have no clue about what is happening.

The area has a few other wifi networks from my neghboors, so I changed  2.4Ghz to a less crowded channel. The 5ghz is currently on channel 149 which has no other network nearby.

The 2.4Ghz is set to G/N devices on 20Mhz and the 5Ghz is set to N/AC devices on 80Mhz.

Everything looks well set but it's just a metter of setting smart connect off and WiFi drops start to happens every one hour or so.

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • What wireless devices do you have connected?
  • Ensure any devices with WiFi adapter drivers are updated.
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area that maybe causing interferences? Link> Use a WiFi Scanner to find out. How many?
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear. 13 for EU regions. Try channel 48 or 149 on 5Ghz.

Here are the answers:
1) ISP Service: Cable (Brazil Net Virtua 240 mbps plan)
2) ISP Modem: Arris model 1962A set on bridge mode
3) Three iPhones running iOs 12.1.1 (latest firmware) -> All of them get disconnected one or two hours later when I set smart connect to off
4) Any other routers in the area: A few other routers from neighboors running on 2.4Ghz
5) Manual Channel: DIR 878 2.4Ghz is set on channel 10, as this is the less congestioned channel available. Used inSSIDER to identify the best channel
On 5Ghz the router is set to channel 149

To test, have different SSiDs for 2.4 and 5 and see if they disconnect.

Try Channels 1, 6 or 11 or 13 if there not used or not many others on them. Channel 10 is not a primary channel. Primary channels are recommended.

Although I don't think that changing channel by itself may resolve the issue, I'll try that tonight and let you know about the results.
Additionally, I will also set different SSDs for 2.4 and 5GHz and see how it goes, although I would not like to live with two different networks.

I have already reviewed the logs but nothing strange was found.

I have good news and bad news regarding the issue I posted above ;D

Good news first:
The wifi connection drop issue is not a problem with DIR 878.
I conducted various tests with other routers, including my ISP router, another DLink cheap router I have and a neighboor router. When connected to any of them my Iphones got disconnected after a few hours.

Now the bad news:
iOS is currently on version 12.1.2 and it seems that since version 11.0 many many many users have been complaining about Wifi drops after this update. Just google on Apple forums that you will find many people with same issue.

It seems this issue happens on iPhones 5, 6, 6s, 7, 8, X ...
For my suprise, I asked my sister in law about this issue with her iPhone and she told me that since ever iPhones in her house eventually disconnect from WiFi here and there.

That being said, I conducted more detailed tests
I confirmed that iPhone is totally able to roam between wifi networks 2.4G and 5G when signal gets weaker, however, for some unknown and weird reason, it seems that sometimes this roam process does not happen as expected and booom !!! that's when you get WiFi connection drops.

In all my tests, it happens ONLY when I have two wifi networks 2.4G and 5G with same SSID. If I turn 5G radio off, this problem never happens. I could confirm this with DIR 878, Arris Router, Humax Router and my Neighboor router. WIFI CONNECTION DROP ONLY HAPPENS WHEN YOU HAVE A 5G NETWORK AVAILABLE WITH SAME SSID AS 2.4G AND IF YOUR iPhone IS CONNECTED TO THE 5G WIFI NETWORK.

So, now my only hope is wait for the next iOS build. In the meantime, I found that if I keep smart connect on in the DIR 878 router, this issue does not happen anymore even if I have two networks with same SSID available.

This is the latest status about this issue.
@Moderators, please keep this thread active as I will provide more information if something new happens.

What happens if you turn OFF the 2.4Ghz radio and enable the 5Ghz radio only?

What happens if you turn OFF the 2.4Ghz radio and enable the 5Ghz radio only?

I did this test and my iPhones also got disconected with the error message "incorrect password". I had to restart the phone so it could connect again.

The problem happens if (and only if) the iPhone is connected to the 5G network, regardless whether there is a 2.4G network available.

I found on many forums people saying that this issue is solved by changing 5G network to 40/80Mhz,  but for me, playing with this setting had no effect.

The issue stopped to happen when I installed DD-WRT and then reverted back to stock dlink firmware 1.04 and then upgraded straight to v1.12.

I think you can mark this thread as resolved.
