Mod a 4500?
« on: July 14, 2010, 11:23:05 PM »

Today I had a thought, and wanted to know what people thought, including the moderators. I was thinking about modding my 4500. Nothing to serious. Just replacing the antenna, trying to find the SDK for the OLED, and modding the case with a material thats better for heat distribution. Maybe put a fan in there and run it off the USB. I know it will void my warrenty, and I don't want to do anything that will fringe apon the intellectual properety, I just want it to run cooler and look cooler. So what do you all think? Crazy? Stupid? Fun? All three?   This picture gave me the idea.

Interesting...
Must say though, these units really get that hot? LOL.  ::)

As for the antenna...ya was thinking there could be better antennas applied. I was thinking of just adding 3 external High Gain antennas..Like Hawking. Someone on here mentioned that he did this and it greatly improved the radio. Even on 5Ghz. Hmmm.

I would be interesting to see if you could put in a small (QUIET) fan inside.  ;D

Well my plan is to take a dremmel to certian parts of the case. I want to take it apart and study it though to make sure I don't hit anything structural, or ofcourse, electrical. Then I want to fill the now empty space with plastic mesh, maybe panted with infrared paint so it glows from the black lights I have in my case. Then I want to drill a hole along the top and insert a heat sink. I think between the mesh and and the sink, that should keep it alot cooler without adding power that could cause problems. Then wall mount it. I would also like to work out some kind of wire control. I am thinking spring snakes mounted to the hex screws that hold the case together, that way theres less strain on the ethernet as it hangs down. Kind of busy with a project now, but I will post pictures as I start.
