Dir-868L USB hard drive problems
« on: February 27, 2014, 02:49:59 PM »

I have my new router up and running and am having a problem with the USB hard drive. The drive is a Seagate go flex 3TB. I have used the drive for over a year with my dir-825 using shareport plus to connect to it. It has worked great. With the new 868L router shareport sees the drive tries to connect but does not. I can switch views and double click on it and it maps it under my network folder as an IP address of my router (192.168.123.1). It will not map or connect the drive as normal. It also has written a bunch of folders and files to the drive. .metadata .system_data .system_file.

I tried another drive (500 gig 2.5 sata to usb 3.0) and the same thing happened. It wrote the same folders/files to the drive. This is too weird. I don't know what I am doing wrong. I have tried selecting usb 3.0 and back to usb 2.0 and no help. The router is A1 with 1.07 firmware, shareport 4.30.

Link>Welcome!

  • What region are you located?

Is the drives formatted NTFS? Official drive sizes are usually no more than 500Gb...

I am in Canada. Drives are NTFS. I am not familiar with regions. I have several 2tb NTFS drives.

Update, I have hooked up my dir-825 router as a switch (dhcp disabled) wired lan to lan. It is working good and I have some extra lan ports now in my shop. I have successfully used both hard drives with shareport (normal operation) off of that router that is hooked up to the Dir-868L. I do however need the USB drive in the house where the Dir-868L router is. I am a backup to hard drive fanatic.

There is something very strange with the USB out on the Dir-868L. I am pretty experienced with my old Dir-825 and had no problems hooking up the 3Tb and other hard dives with that router.

Try this with the 868L next time:
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=46133.0

I think also the name in the mapping of the drive might also depend on how the router sees the USB drive as well...

I mapped the drive in this case using \\192.168.123.1\asmt_2105_20662. The name following the ip is the default manufactures name for the drive. Seagate 500 gig 2.5" sata. I clicked on the link showing in shareport and the drive mapped under Network and I just switched around the name/IP

It still will not connect using shareport and the file system is a little weird. I think the added files are from the Distributed File System (DFS) which I have never heard of until now. In the properties of the mapped drive is a DFS tab.

Added to every folder on the drive is a .metadata folder with files like .file_list.movie.name.ascent, .file_list.photo.name.ascent etc...   In total on the 3tb drive there is 11,000 .metadata files added to the drive. This is not a good workaround. The files are also shaded out like hidden system files.

There is definitely something wrong coming from the Dir-825 to the Dir-868L using the USB. I will have to get this fixed. I selected the router as it had USB 3.0 which was important to me and my previous dlink router dir-825 was great.

Glad you got it mapped.

I recommend using a small sized drive as a test platform to see how the drive interacts with the router and start with using a small amount of test files and go from there.

Keep us posted....Please post any an all information here on this thread please.

I have both drives connected with both of them showing up in shareport. The 3tb connects and works fine on the dir-825. The 500 gig drive on the dir-868L does not unless I map it and I cannot get rid of all of the .metadata files and folders. It will not connect in shareport. I don't know of any limitations on the drives around 500 gig. I have never had this limitation on the dir-825.

Is this a limitation on the dir-868L or is something wrong with mine. Either way I will have to return it if I cannot get it to work without writing all these .metadata files and folders.

recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and get immediate help and information on this. There maybe an issue with the router or SP may not be supported on this model router. Ask for level 2 or higher support.

Let us know how it goes...

I'll give my 868L a try this weekend and see if I exhibit the same thing...Mines currently being used as a bridge.  ::)

I've got the other moderator on here thats going to test this out as well on his 868L. So we'll see what we find out at post the results.

I'll test a 250Gb and a 2Tb drive.

DIR-858L v1.07
Windows 7x64
Shareport v4.00
250Gb USB Drive:

MetaData folder size was less that 1Mb.

2Tb USB drive:

MetaData folder size was 55Mb

I noticed that upon mounting of the 2Tb drive, a log in pop up appeared. I logged in with my routers admin credentials and was able to access the drive.

I was able to delete files and folder with out issue.

I presume that the metadata folder and other hidden folders maybe generated by the router and needs to remain on the drive.

Hi Furry Nutz,
    I intend to buy this 868L.  :)
I am using a Netgear 3400 router which has this ReadyShare feature which puts any USB storage I stick in under this ReadyShare folder. I have mapped it on my Windows and I can access it on my phones (Using ES Explorer under the ReadyShare Folder in my LAN. I can even mount it on my LG Optimus G.

I want to know if it will work in similar fashion on 868l OR I have access my files through Shareport app which is something I dont want to do.  I am in India.
