Internet "earth" icon flashing forever.
« on: January 04, 2011, 06:36:08 PM »

I read somewhere this is to show that the connection is unstable?

My modem works fine, and it works fine being plugged directly into my PC.

But going through the modem, I am noticing some drops in speed and spikes of high latency. This icon - the little earth/internet icon - has never flashed for a long period of time before. I've power cycled it (unplugged for over 5 mins) and it persists.

Does it need a firmware upgrade? Is it something I did? Faulty hardware?

What ISP service do you have? DSL or Cable?

Check the cabling between your modem and router?

Ensure primary and 2ndary DNS IP addresses are being filling in under Setup/Internet/Manual settings.

Turn off Advanced DNS Services.

Change WiFi from mixed mode to Single G mode only.

Change Firewall settings for TCP and UDP both to Endpoint Independent.

Shaw. (Canada, BC) Cable.

The cords connecting the two are fine.

I don't know what you mean about the primary and 2ndary DNS IP. I fill it out? With what?

Advanced DNS Services were already off.

Changed to G mode only.

Changed TCP AND UDP to endpoint independant.

Earth light is still flashing.

I have a DIR-655 and the blue "earth" icon blinks too. However, after consulting the user manual for this device, it appears this is normal--it is just an indication of internet data transmission. To quote the manual:
A solid light indicates connection on the Internet port. This LED blinks during data transmission. A solid blue light indicates that there is an Internet connection, an orange light indicates that there is none.

Primary and 2ndary DNS addresses can be found in the Status/Device Info/Wan secion. Copy and paste those 2 addresses into the Setup/Internet/Manual secion if they are not filled in already.
