I've been running 1.21NA since roughly the time of its release.  Not only would the router lag and lock-up (especially when attempting to upload large files, such as attempting to upload video to YouTube), but it would also occasionally cause my cable modem to reset.  I had to unplug my router about once every 48 hours or so.  Not wanting to risk installing the beta firmware, I scoured various different forums, and have found settings that make the router very stable.  I've disabled DNS Relay, WISH, and GameFuel.  With all of those disabled, on 1.21NA, the router is behaving better than it ever has before, and I've owned it for almost a year.

My 4500 still has FW 1.02 on it, and I've found over time that I get the best results with all of those off as well. I was running WISH for a while, but it seems to run better wired and wireless with it turned off. I have Wifi Protected Setup turned off as well. I bought mine the first week they were in-stock at CompUSA. Heh... So, pretty much since release.

I agree with Hank, I have mine set up with Wish and WiFi Protected Setup off. IF you don't use them, no need for them to be on.

FurryNutz,
I was wondering if you could provide me with the link to the latest beta FW version that you've been using since I have HWA2 and FW1.21NA dated 2009/07/09 and have been having the router lock up every 2-3 days requiring a reboot.  I have also been having many of the other issues described throughout these posts such a WiFi dropping every so often on N or mixed mode N and G (2.4GHz) and data transfers larger than 80-100MB failing from my wired NAS to wireless client.

Thanks!  I updated the firmware after backing up my config but upon loading the config the router locks up and must be reset.  It seems as though I may have to put all of the settings back in again manually which is a bit time consuming since I have set up 11 DHCP reservations, mac filtering amongst other settings.  Is there any way around this that your aware of?  For now I put the firmware back to the 1.21NA since it will at least operate so-so and I'll have everything set up.

AFter the FW update did you perform a Factory Reset then re-apply the saved Configuration file? I haven't seen this issue after reapplying the file after a FW update. I have been using the same file here since 1.21NA.

I did not and will try that next time.  By factory reset do you mean resetting the router through the interface or by holding in the button on the back for 10 sec.?

I have to thank all of the entries on the forum. I purchased this router just this month, I have set it up, had some issue with WI-FI and found the Shareport didn't work with firmware 1.15 which came with the router. So I loaded the 1.21NA firmware so I could take advantage of the Shareport option and hopefully correct the WI-FI issue. I need to have the 2.4 GHZ working so I can communicate with an other laptop and a older printer server. So with that setting along with the other suggestion I tried to resolve the issue. But with a limited success, changing to use 801 b & g I was able to extend the up period before crashing but not to any satisfaction.

The Shareport worked great, the LAN works great, but the constant crashing of the WI-FI has made me determine that I must return the router before I can't get a refund. There is no fix, no solution posted that has worked.  The sad thing is I had such high expectations for an alternative to Linksys. This router looked so promising but to have a product out with such poor QoS is sad.  :(

Drake, the 1.21NA from the main web page is not working well, Upload the v1.22 beta FW that is available. It's working well and stable for both Wired and Wireless connections. I wish DLink would not keep the v1.21 up on the web site. Save your configuration, update the FW, do a Factory reset, then upload the saved configuration file to avoid manual configurations. I'm running 2.4Ghz N mode only. Been pretty good. Let us know how it goes.

Drake don't listen to furrynutz and return the router for something else like a netgear wndr3700.  We've been plagued by problem fw for over a year now.  Furry wants you to disable features that you paid for in order to keep the router running.  Don't fall for this...you paid for a working router and you won't get one with any post 1.2x fw.  Take it back and get something else and stop worrying about dropped connections and lockups.

Fuzzy, I did that today, last resort, same dropping issue on the wireless. I can't even play a game on wireless without it dropping. Stays up only minutes at a time. I really am sadden by the poor quality, I am not even sure where the problem is, firmware? hardware?

Thanks Puff I will look into that netgear.

Drake, are what wireless mode are you using?  I have a buddy using G mode only on 2.4 Ghz. Mixed mode doesn't work well for gaming. Take a look at my gaming post here:
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=10435.0

What HW version are you running. Also how far away is the wireless adaptor from the 4500?

Tired of messing around with D-Link and all the broken promises?  Want to roll your
dgl-4500 firmware back to 1.15 right now?  The two links below have the fix. This
is not a joke.  It works.  Both sites are very reputable and people have tested it.

http://www.ispgeeks.com/wild/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=4224#15926

and

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r23720820-downgrade-possible-DGL4500-12xNA115

Follow the simple instructions and tell d-link where to stuff it.

Christmas was a little late this year but better late than never!
