DGL-4500 Wireless and XBox360 Security Issue
« on: March 12, 2014, 02:36:10 AM »

Hello.  Currently, my router and room configuration for the devices are as follows.

Room 1 - Living Room - Room 2

Room 1 has the PCs and the cable modem and router.
Living Room has Xbox One
Room 2 has an original Xbox360.

The 360 has always had a hard time connecting to the router, I'm thinking, because of the distance from the router.  Once in awhile, it will connect, but would usually disconnect after a bit of time.  Today, I updated the firmware on the D-Link and thought I would try the 360 connection again.  It DOES see the router.  However, it says that there is No Security so no option to enter any password.  But there is a password entered in the Basic>Wireless section.  The Xbox One in the living room sees the router with the security lock icon, as does a tablet I have.  Both the Xbox One and the tablet connected without a problem after putting in the password.  So why do two devices see the security of the router while the 360 does not?

My current D-Link configuration for security:

WPA-Personal
Auto (WPA or WPA2)
TKIP and AES
Group Key Update Interval 3600
Pre-Shared Key input with password

Thank you for any insight into this mystery.

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

What frequency are you using on the 4500?
What is the distance between the router and the 360?
What generation model is the 360?
Have you done a factory reset under Configure Network on the 360 then attempted to connect?

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion and Good Neighbour Policy
  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz routers: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N on 5Ghz?
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
