Ping times almost doubling and jitter issues at peak times.
« on: January 07, 2012, 07:37:14 AM »

Hi,

I noticed the past couple of weeks that when I run a ping test using pingtest.net my ping times almost double and my jitter triples in the evenings.

During the day a typical ping test would be 25-28msec and jitter  is less than 10ms.

If I run a ping test after 6PM, my pings come in at 38-40msec and my jitter is 20-30ms. My speed is not effected just the ping gets worse.

Anyone have an idea why? I already had a tech come out and check my cabling from my house to the street. I have also verified my cabling just to be certain.

Is this normal for cable? Anyone else that has Cable notice this trend with their ping test, day vs night?

I agree 100% with Fury.  To elaborate, cable users are grouped in 'nodes'.  The more people that are on your 'node', you can see slower speed and/or increased ping times during 'peak' times (ie, After work, on weekends, etc).

Some people with DSL think they don't have to deal with this, but they actually do. It's just further down the pipe, at their CO.  :)
