How to connect an external USB hard drive to DIR-645 ?
« on: January 08, 2012, 09:46:03 AM »

Hi,

how to connect an external USB hard drive to DIR-645 ?
DNLA only works for music, videos and pictures but not for all other files. I want to have access to all files on that USB harddrive.
I can't find any other info regarding usb hard drive connection beside DLNA Settings in the manual.

Thanks.

You do understand that DLNA isn't a feature on this model router right? The DIR-857, 827 and 657 have DLNA features. To use a USB HD on the USB port, you need to install SharePort utility on each PC that you want have connect to the USB drive connected to the USB port on the router.

Hi FurryNutz,

thanks. The pc_shareport_plus_utility_100 software was the missing piece (found it on d-link homepage) and it works great.

I'm wondering for what the topic DLNA Settings in the DIR-645 manual is good for  ???

The manual might be a general text information since these routers are basically the same and do the same things, all they do is change the titles sometimes and some of the text to reflect other models that do have DLNA. I don't have a 645, yet and I looked at my 657 and it has a Media Server settings under Setup. Does the 645 have this option?

Funny I connected a WD 2TB book yesterday and could not get the 657 to recognize the drive. Ya I had Shareport running. Not sure what thats about. Don't what to get off topic here. Glad you found your fix.

Yes, under advanced setting there is DLNA Settings and ITUNES SERVER.

I tested the DLNA Settings and it's working  ;D

1. Checkmark the Share media libraries with devices
2. Name your media library: e.g.  DIR645_DMS
3. After save settings I could browse the external USB harddrive and search for the folder with music
4. After saving the settings I found DIR645_DMS under network >>> multimedia
5. a double klick on DIR645_DMS opens the Media Player where I can play the mp3's (under other media libraries) from that external harddrive

Good to know despite I'm using the external usb harddrive with shareport software.

I forgot to mention that I can browse that external USB harddrive over shareport software during playing a mp3 over DLNA.

Good info man. Thanks for the details. I will check out mine this evening.

Also I'm using v4 on the Shareport SW found on the DIR-835 web site.

Need to make sure the external drive is properly formatted for NTSF or FAT32. Some drive Mfrs install a proprietary formatting on there drives which may cause proper connection issues when connecting to D-Link routers.

Hi

Same kind of problem for me on my DIR-645.  I try to put a WD my book essential on the usb port on the router and it doesn't work.  I try with a small WD passport and it's working.  Can someone know what I can do with this?  Thank you.  ( doesn't work as shareport and DLNA)
