D-Link DNS-320 Mapping Issue
« on: February 10, 2012, 05:06:49 AM »

I followed the cd setup .. as it is.. now everythings completed.

No I'm not new at networking . I know some stuff so after I went and changed a few things .. some of which should be done

1) went to d-link website (the server config page) .. set a static IP for the server..

2) went to my router .. opened two ports ... port 80 for http and port 21 for ftp.

3) I also Have a dyndns.com account or what I call dynamic dns.

4) went to network settings and under sharing opened again the two ports ... 21 and 80 ...

I'm using wired for this whole setup...

Any Reason why D-link easy map or the mapping interface under my computer says failed to map....
Does it have anything to do with the EXT 3 file system .. I checked .. yup my firmware is 2.02b and thats how I know its EXT3 ....

Reply Fast ... I've run into a corner .. How to get out of it..

What are you trying to do? Map shares? If so you just use \\dlink\share name

thats the thing ... it can't map .. with error file system not accessible.....

I think its because windows can't read EXT 3 ?

if so how to format it to NTFS or maybe FAT?

How did I get EXT 3? Ask Dlink.. thats the default they gave me through the server setup

The DNS-320 formats disks using the linux file system. The file system used by the DNS-320 has no bearing on mapping to a Windows PC.

Enter this as your network map:

\\[DNS-320_IP_ADDRESS]\Volume_1

the IP address of your DNS-320.  You can find this information through the web interface of your router.  Typically, the address will look something like this: 192.168.1.X

I checked .. found it under attached devices it says 10.0.0.10...

I have turned off my dynamic dns under both router and the config page but still it does not connect.. whats wrong

Your initial problem description is very confusing...
1st: I have no idea what port 80 and 21 have to do with Mapping a drive from Window.
Port 80 is used for HTTP access/server
Port 21 is for FTP
SMB is a different port, probably 445 but within your LAN, and it is use to map drives.

If you are accessing all of the ports mentioned above from within your LAN/Home network, there is not need to touch the router at ALL.

Sure :

1) I go through the cd that came with the package ... I follow through the setup by giving it an static ip address namely 10.0.0.10

next is the dynamic dns page ... I'm on www.dlinkddns.com .... I had to open port 80 for that....

Then comes the format hard disk page and its done.

Now I goto the website 10.0.0.10 and
(firmware for dns-320 is v2.02)

1) goto account management .... setup a user namely me and a group.

2) I goto network shares and select volume for sharing... it does ask for a hosts ip.. so I just put my 10.0.0.10 for that. I select everything on that list.

3) I try mapping and boom fails.

added info just in case.

Note : My Lan ip is static @ 10.0.0.2 ... I got 2 routers

1 from my isp which is just for connection to them  and the other router is a gateway where all my port forwarding is done + attached devices etc...
