I followed the cd setup .. as it is.. now everythings completed.
No I'm not new at networking . I know some stuff so after I went and changed a few things .. some of which should be done
1) went to d-link website (the server config page) .. set a static IP for the server..
2) went to my router .. opened two ports ... port 80 for http and port 21 for ftp.
3) I also Have a dyndns.com account or what I call dynamic dns.
4) went to network settings and under sharing opened again the two ports ... 21 and 80 ...
I'm using wired for this whole setup...
Any Reason why D-link easy map or the mapping interface under my computer says failed to map....
Does it have anything to do with the EXT 3 file system .. I checked .. yup my firmware is 2.02b and thats how I know its EXT3 ....
Reply Fast ... I've run into a corner .. How to get out of it..

What are you trying to do? Map shares? If so you just use \\dlink\share name
-
thats the thing ... it can't map .. with error file system not accessible.....
I think its because windows can't read EXT 3 ?
if so how to format it to NTFS or maybe FAT?
How did I get EXT 3? Ask Dlink.. thats the default they gave me through the server setup

Please see the following two sticky posts in our ShareCenter FAQ board:
- Mapping a DNS ShareCenter Device (IP vs. Volume Name) (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=41845.0)
- DNS ShareCenter - Mapping a Volume using Windows (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=41840.0)

The DNS-320 formats disks using the linux file system. The file system used by the DNS-320 has no bearing on mapping to a Windows PC.
Enter this as your network map:
\\[DNS-320_IP_ADDRESS]\Volume_1

Under network in the dlink config page it asks for a host(s)? So I put my configured IP ?
-
Ok I'm Lost
Where do I start ??
the cd guided me through.. and poof after that just map and it should be it right? I mean I did open ports too so whats wrong?
10.0.0.10 is the webiste for my dlink config page.... is this also my mapping number ? Or do I use the one I get from the dynamic dns?
-
confused now.. which ip address is the mapper ?

the IP address of your DNS-320. You can find this information through the web interface of your router. Typically, the address will look something like this: 192.168.1.X

I checked .. found it under attached devices it says 10.0.0.10...
I have turned off my dynamic dns under both router and the config page but still it does not connect.. whats wrong
-
Your initial problem description is very confusing...
1st: I have no idea what port 80 and 21 have to do with Mapping a drive from Window.
Port 80 is used for HTTP access/server
Port 21 is for FTP
SMB is a different port, probably 445 but within your LAN, and it is use to map drives.
If you are accessing all of the ports mentioned above from within your LAN/Home network, there is not need to touch the router at ALL.
-
ok I'm seriously lost now....
tried mapping using the found in my router attached devices \\10.0.0.10\volume_1 failed
tried my dynamic dns well I did make a host(s) failed
now what where did I go wrong? I do know that the NAS CAN detect the hard drive
-
Can you please describe the process you are using to map your drives?
-
Sure :
1) I go through the cd that came with the package ... I follow through the setup by giving it an static ip address namely 10.0.0.10
next is the dynamic dns page ... I'm on www.dlinkddns.com .... I had to open port 80 for that....
Then comes the format hard disk page and its done.
Now I goto the website 10.0.0.10 and
(firmware for dns-320 is v2.02)
1) goto account management .... setup a user namely me and a group.
2) I goto network shares and select volume for sharing... it does ask for a hosts ip.. so I just put my 10.0.0.10 for that. I select everything on that list.
3) I try mapping and boom fails.
added info just in case.
Note : My Lan ip is static @ 10.0.0.2 ... I got 2 routers
1 from my isp which is just for connection to them and the other router is a gateway where all my port forwarding is done + attached devices etc...
-
so whats wrong? or where did I go wrong ?
-
Let's try mapping from Windows:
- Right click on "My Computer"
- Select "Map Network Drive"
- Enter "\\[IP_ADDRESS]\Volume_1"
- Press Finish
- You may be prompted for login credentials
- The mapped drive will appear in My Computer
-
nope no go ... windows cannot access the said Ip address
-
Did you log into your router web interface to validate that the IP address you are using is the one assigned to the DNS-320?
The IP address should start with 192.168.x.x
-
First. Have you tried opening network places on your PS - assuming you are using windows - and does it show the DNS-320?
Second. If you are using windows have you cleared the DNS-320 through the firewall?
Third. When you say you try mapping what do you actually do?

@ Ivan read the previous page.. The long post describes it all on page 1

@ Java --- well I'm not sure about 192.168.x.x cause my routers base is 10.0.0.x so there the NAs is also 10.0.0.x .... so under attached devices in the router I find it as 10.0.0.x

yes I did
-
OK. Just confirm that you can access the DNS-320 web interface directly from your browser by entering http://10.0.0.10/ this should bring up the log in screen. You may have done this but it isn't clear from your previous posts if you are doing this directly or using the cd.

I have done it from both cd and directly

anyone got an idea lol
I dunno seriously where went wrong.. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can you ping the device through a command prompt? Do you have another PC to create a test mapping? Did you consider using a dynamic IP address?
-
OK, back to basics.
After you log in to the web interface go to 'Management' --> 'Network Management' --> 'Lan Setup' There you should have
'Static IP' marked
'IP Address' 10.0.0.1
'Subset mask' 255.255.255.0
'Gateway Address' ???.???.???.??? This should point to your gateway address on your network and will most probably be something like 10.0.0.XXX
'DNS1'
'DNS2' DNS1 & 2 will depend on your setup.
If your settings are different please list them.

Ping test works fine... positive result

Hi,
Some silly questions. What operating system are you using? Have you selected Volume_1 as one of your network shares on the 320? Can you see and access the 320 via W7 "Network" or XP "My Network Places"? Please and thank you.

good questions but
W7. Selected. Via W7 "Network" -- No.

Hi again,
Have you selected Volume_1 as one of your network shares on the 320 or created any network shares? If not, please do and then reboot 320 and W7 machine. Please and thanks

I have selected volume 1 rebooted... nope still the same

Hi again and again,
Do your computer and NAS use the same network name?
-
u mean same workgroup name? if so then yes
-
Hi,
Is your W7 machine connected to the same router as the NAS via ethernet, or wireless? And have you enabled file sharing on the W7 machine? Also, what else is showing on your network, anything? What is the IP on the first router and is that a combo modem router? Does that first one have DHCP enabled?

first one dhcp... NAs connected to both first and second
first is a combo .. 2nd is a pure gateway
Nothing is showing on the network
file sharing yes enabled is a yes
-
anyone else knows ??
-
What's your static IP address of your NAS and router?
For example, if your NAS is set to let say: 10.0.0.200 then if you enter \\10.0.0.200 under windows run (Win key + R) does it show a list of volume available?
-
Hi,
I think I get more confused as I read your responses. If I get it right, you are using 2 routers, one a combo modem / router which you are using to handle DHCP and the second as a "gateway" in some mode bridge, repeater, ap or what? Then you have a "network" which consists of a W7 machine and the 320 does not show up in the W7 Network and therefore, you can't map the 320 as a drive. And you have "NAs connected to both first and second" router. How is that possible?
Using 2 routers together sucessfully can be difficult and with some combinations impossible. I have to suspect that there is something with how you are using the 2nd router, not sure why you would do that unless your 1st combo router has only one ethernet port, and in that case, I would suggest you consider an inexpensive switch for additional ports. I would also skip using static ips at first and let DHCP handle the initial assignment and then switch it back after you have things working. Good luck

To all who tried to help .... Thanks.... But I solved it on my own lol... If u check my first post on page the super long thread which has my setup... it's correct ... YES.. Why it's not showing up I dunno BUT when I REFORMATTED my system back to scratch .... I check W7 network section and erm it's there LOL ... Yes it's there after a reformat
-
close this topic and consider it solved LOL
