Hi there.

My ISP provided a cablemodem / router, but i'm having issues that I believe are DHCP related.   Reservations aren't working, duplicate IPs, and taking up to 2-3 minutes to get an IP assigned.

Rather than fight any longer with my ISP, i want to just disable the DHCP server on the cablemodem and enable the DHCP server on the Dlink device.   However, since the Dlink isn't performing any routing functions, i need to understand how to configure it such that the routes that it gives to the clients includes a default gateway that is not itself.   Details:

Cablemodem is 192.168.0.1
Dlink is 192.168.0.2  (i use this as a 2nd wireless point in a different part of the house.
Both devices are wired into the same switch.
All client devices are wired into the switch.  no client devices are wired directly into either cablemodem or the dlink.

When i enable DHCP on the dlink, clients get a default gateway of 192.168.0.2, so naturally they are unable to get to the internet via the real gateway of 192.168.0.1

how do i configure the dlink such that all devices (including itself) know that the default gateway is the cablemodem @ 192.168.0.1?

P.S.  I tried adding a route of 0.0.0.0, netmask 0.0.0.0, gateway 192.168.0.1, but it wouldn't accept 0.0.0.0.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
Double NAT
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

Try changing the 4500s IP address from .0.1 to .1.1 maybe.

ISP: Rogers, Cable.
Modem: Hitron CGN2-ROG.   This is a cable modem with built in router & wireless.
Neither device is bridged. 

If having 2 routers on the network is a problem how do i disable the dlink's routing capabilities so it really just acts as a 2nd wireless access point. perhaps that'll solve the issues that i'm seeing.

or do i need to go forward with bridging, and if so, on which one?
