Title: Hard Drive(s) Formatting Failure (Error Code:107)
Post by: fordem on May 18, 2009, 06:50:42 AM
As a prelude to some ext2 vs ext3 performance tests, I pulled a drive from my DNS-323 (2x80GB Maxtors in RAID1), powered it up and attempted to format the remaining one.

The status page showed the expected degraded status and I got the email alerts telling me the array was degraded (new in 1.08) and that a drive had failed, but no amber LED.

I selected Tools/RAID and then "Set RAID Type and Re-Format" and as expected my only option was "Standard Volume" so I clicked Next, accepted the warning message, selected Ext2 (best performance) for the file system and clicked Next - the progress bar shows up, it jumps from 1% to 100% and then fails with the message

Hard Drive(s) Formatting Failue (Error Code:107)

Three tries, same results every time

I used a desktop to remove all partitions from the drive and tried again, this time the format reports as "successful"

Hi Fordem:
   Is this issue reproductible? That means, if you create Raid1 again with the two Maxtor 80G disks, and go through the procedure again, then this issue will definitely come out.

Hello all, I am running into the same issue...  I had two 1 TB WD drives.  One went bad.  RMA'ed back to WD and got a new drive in the mail.  New drive happens to be 1.5 TB (that shouldn't matter).  During rebuild, RAID 1 reformat is failing at 1% with the dreaded 107 error.

To double check the new drive, I pulled the original 1 TB drive and just put the 1.5 TB in the NAS.  After powering on, I was able to successfully format the new 1.5 TB in the NAS (so the new drive is good).  So, considering that the new drive is good, I put the 1 TB drive back in and no dice, 107 error again when trying to rebuilt/format the RAID 1 array.

Any chance this issue can be fixed by the firmware?  I don't have a desktop, so I can't remove all the partitions.

I got that message when running FFP. I had to rename fun_plug to fun_plugOFF and reboot. ALL was good after that.

Had twin Seagate 1TB Barracuda ES drives. Right one failed. Sent back to Seagate and got replacement. DNS-323 sees it OK, knows its serial number, but when it tries to format it before going into RAID 1 mode, HD format fails with error code 107. Pulled drive out and tried on Windows box, which saw it OK and formatted to NTFS OK. Tried again on DNS-323 with no joy. Reset to factory defaults and format only got to 3%. What is Error code 107 and how do I get this to format? I'm using FW 1.08b8.  When I downgraded to FW 1.07 it worked.  New drive from Seagate never had any partitions to delete.

So is this only an issue when fun_plug is running? Somewhat concerned about this. I'm assuming Linux doesn't natively suffer from hard disk access and format issues in raid this frequently so I don't understand why it's so difficult for this box. Isn't most of raid controlled at hardware level? So removing partitions manually isn't the solution either if the same happened with the new disk?

I'm guessing most of the RAID functions of the DNS-323 are done in software...

Did you have fun_plug running when you had the issue? That would explain why it didn't show up in testing assuming it didn't

I can verify 'acomp917's previous reply, in that if you've got a fun_plug installed (in my case, the Fonz fun_plug), you'll need to disable it and reboot the DNS-323 before attempting to reformat your drives.

In my case, I just renamed the 'fun_plug' file to 'fun_plug_off' in 'Volume_1'.

Once I did this, no more Error Code:107. Of course, there goes your fun_plug...

try to disable the firewall and antivirus on the computer then reset the DNS for 10 seconds,, reformat again the drive.

In my case, I didn't disable my firewall (Outpost) or anti-malware (AntiVir and Defender) software - only the fun_plug, after which the drive reformatted okay to completion.

Though if you don't have a fun_plug installed, these are other options worth trying.

Installing/reinstalling the fun_plug is a doddle too - see:

and

I got this error while a fun_plug was installed.

Using the help on this board from acomp917, I resolved the issue. I can say as he did:

"I had to rename fun_plug to fun_plugOFF and reboot. ALL was good after that."

To rename, I accessed the server by SSH, went into Volume_1, and renamed it.

Thanks!

I had the same issue. Once I renamed fun_plug it worked. Thanks!!

Yep.  Had a hard drive failure in a two disk RAID-1 setup on a DNS-321.  When I went to format the new drive, and I got error 107.

But moving:

$ mv /net/dns321/mnt/HD_a2/fun_plug /net/dns321/mnt/HD_a2/fun_plug-old

and rebooting did the trick.  Once formatted was done and rebooted, I then:

$ mv /net/dns321/mnt/HD_a2/fun_plug-old /net/dns321/mnt/HD_a2/fun_plug

and rebooted a third time.  Success!

Thank the gods of technology this thread exists.  I got the same error but disabling fun_plug fixed it!
