Port info in "Internet Sessions".
« on: August 25, 2012, 04:19:04 PM »

In Internet Sessions, port 3074 shows as "-" i.e. hyphen, in the state column. Does this mean that it isn't opening properly? Out of the other ports triggered for xbl some show "EST" (Established), and some others aren't listed. I have ports triggered and Upnp enabled too. I have two Xboxes, so I need to trigger, not forward.

If port 3074 isn't opening, why would this be and how can it be rectified. The router has recently had a pinhole reset done and fw version 2.01 loaded. The reason for this was I was having issues with gaming using fw 2.05 & 2.06.

The router is Version B1.

I've also seen some log entries I've not seen before. Is there any internet resource to explain what all the log entries mean, like a glossary?

Cheers.

Yes, I got this from yourself at an earlier time. Thanks for your help once again.

The only thing that is not set up is QOS. The reason being that it caused issues when used with the other firmware. TBH it's been a long battle with my ISP too, who were upgrading servers and this caused many issues. Therefore, I had to make sure my settings were optimised to give me a half decent gaming connection, so I've followed all the advice.

Not really sure if QOS is going to help me any further at the moment because I now have a 60 Mb down and 3 Mb up connection. My pings are usually between 13 and 30, with single figure jitter. Packet loss has been an issue, but I'm clear of that scenario now.

One other observation is that in the "Internet Sessions" section, 3074 shows up as Protocol UDP (state = "-"), but is port triggered as ANY. However, both Xboxes have open NAT ratings, although I'd like to see 3074 shown in its EST state. It bugs me to think I may be losing something if 3074 is not opening correctly.

Also, sometimes getting "m_table count" messages in the logs. Halo feels odd at the time of these messages?

Thanks again.

Whats your ISP service again? Cable or DSL?
Built in router with modem?
Whats the make and model of the ISP modem?

How are you connected to the router when gaming? Wired is preferred.
I would try to set up QoS for use in gaming. Does help to maintain a clean connection between the gaming console and modem. After that, need to make sure ISP service, lines an signal is good up to the ISP Modem. For DSL, make sure phone lines are clean, clear and filtered correctly. For cable, make sure line is in good condition, good signal to the ISP modem and if you need a TV line splitter on the line, make it a GOOD quality one. The more splitters you have on the line the lower the signal will be going into the cable modem.

ISP Service = Cable

Modem = Router/Modem combo, but is in 'Modem Mode'. Which is due to it being terrible when wireless side is enabled, hence Modem mode, with my DIR-655 VB1 doing the routing, fw 2.01 (approved by xbl).

ISP Modem = Netgear VMDG480. This Modem has had new fw recently called R36. I have asked the ISP to roll me back to R30 fw. Don't think they will do this! R36 fw is the subject of "mass" complaints about corrupted downloads and more. This is why I need to understand my DIR-655 logs, so that I can rule out a router issue and so I have something to fight the ISP with.

Connected = My Xbox is wired/ethernet to the DIR-655. My sons Xbox is wireless to the DIR-655.

Lines and signals = 1 Splitter at the front end. In - TV Box & Modem on the splitter. Not sure of its quality? Will check. However, my powers levels and SNR (shown in the Modem) are optimised, and are solid/never change.

Based on what I've said about port 3074, do you think it isn't open properly?

Also Ports 88 & 53 aren't even shown in the 'Internet Sessions' section. I'm guessing they're not opening, but don't know how this will affect gaming, if at all. Is this a concern?

I'll try QOS again as it may work with fw version 2.01.

Thanks again for your time. Much appreciated.

I might suggest updating the 655 to v2.03 or .07 aswell. I would also see of you can get a different modem, say a Motorola SB 6141. Also cat6 cabling is recommended.

Port 80, 88 and 53 are not needed has they are normal Internet connections that XBL needs only at certain times and not used all the time like 3074. The only port needed to be in QoS is 3074.

If you have multiple xboxes, try using the multiple xbox rule example listed in the sticky.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

Do you have a link to these two firmware versions please? I had a hard enough time finding V2.01.

I can't change the Modem, because my ISP (Virgin Media) forces its customers to use this Netgear device that they call the "Superhub", even though they've created more firmware versions than enough, and none of them have worked properly. It's a joke! I have no alternative to the ISP I'm using at present. I'm waiting for another to install an FTTC network in my area.

Cheers.

What region are you located?
Where did you get your 655 router at?

Only other thing I would check would be to see if the NG modem/router has a DMZ. If so, place the IP address the 655 gets from the NG and put that in the DMZ.

Ya, I don't care for ISP who wont let customers BYOM.  >:(

I'm in the UK. My 655 is HW version B1. I got fw 2.01 from the German site, but only had that, 2.05 & 2.06 which I've already tried.

Not sure if I can DMZ and keep the NAT open on the other Xbox at the same time. Couldn't with fw version 2.00.

Thanks.

Ok, well, I guess, not sure if the B1 was ment for your region since I don't see any updates for any Rev B for the UK. Odd.

So if you connect directly to the NG modem/router, NAT open?
Using DMZ on NG modem for 655 should produce OPEN NAT. Your dealing with Double NAT here I think.

Defo destined for my region as it has a map of Europe 'only' on the box. Also, I contacted D-Link UK support and they sent me fw v2.06 via email. They also told me never to use US fw versions, only EU ones.

I also, have only ever seen fw versions for the Hw 'A' versions on the UK site. which is why very old and the very latest fw versions are so hard to find.

OK, we wonder why Rev B has been posted yet on the UK site.

Keep us posted on how things work out. Find that DMZ and try it.

I will do, thanks.

Here are a few D-Link ftp sites in and around Europe I've just found. Might be of some use to someone in the future.
