Jumbo Frames Support and Settings ??
« on: December 08, 2008, 12:44:01 AM »

I finally upgraded to an all D-Link Network using CAT6 Cables.

DGL-4500 Router

DGS-2208  8 Port Switch

2- DGE-530T V.B1 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter

The NIC properties has an advanced option for Jumbo Frames with settings of 4088 or 9014

According to this site -- http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/content/view/30250/96/1/1/
The DGL4500 Chip supports 9K jumbo frames but handles 4k no problem.

This is an old posting so I dont know what has been updated with newer firmware.

Should I use Jumbo Frames, and what are the benefits?

- Also under Speed & Duplex the max value I see is only 100 Full/Half Duplex.  Where is the 2000Mbps (Full-duplex) option ??

Here is my current setup.

I see no benefits to jumbo frames in a network that small. Jumbo frames are really meant for backbones and mainframe networks were the network core has  move LARGE amounts of data in a single frame to lighten the load on the switch core.

This may be the setting for your on-board nic.  If you were on the setting for DGE-530T you would see the 2g options.  Jumbo packets are really not that helpfull in a small network and may actually slow you down.  Your pic denotes a total of 4 devices in your network.  Which make me think your into peer to peer and you think that jumbo packets will allow you  do download faster.  But alas this is not the case.  Best thing to do in my eyes is to check your settings on the Dlink Nick and run some tests.  You should be screaming even without Jumbo packets.

Nope, I dont see the 2g options and I looked though all the settings for the NIC properties and configure  options for the DGE-530T

I just installed the drivers off the CD.  I doubt updating the drivers will add this option.  Was I suppose to install other stuff that was on the CD?

Edit : Attached picture, 2nd picture says im connected at 1G

There is no 2g option. All jumbo frames does is change the MTU frame size from 1500 to either 4k or 9 k
The connection speed is still 1gpbs.

Is 2g really necessary? 1g is 10 times faster than a typical LAN connection. What are you transferring that needs to be transferred in such a hurry? Also that's not gonna increase your internet connection speed at all.

na, I was just curious in general if there was an option in the NIC settings because the Switch advertises it.

Im not concerned about internet speed as it's fast enough.  Actually I did notice a nice boost in internet benchmarks when I upgraded the router from an old Linksys router.

Well If I had a card that had a 2G option you bet you ass I would want it to do 2g.

Guys, theres no such thing. LOL

Why does the website say it then?

Gigabit Ethernet: 2000Mbps (Full-duplex)

http://www.dlink.com/products/resource.asp?pid=494&rid=1890&sec=1

Additionally, it utilizes auto- negotiation to automatically adjust to the highest supported transfer rate (up to 2Gbps in full duplex mode).

LOL thats TRANSFER rate guys.
That means it can send a 1000mbps in each direction.

That is some kind of marketing scam....lol   I know what Full-duplex is but I never seen it worded like how it's represented on the site.

not at all, half duplex you run at 1000Mbits one direction at a time at full duplex you get 1000MBits up and down (1000up+1000down=2000) at the same time. but you are still connected at 1000Mbits

I can see where you are coming from, but it seems pretty simple to me.
Lycan is right.

Yes, full duplex means "at the same time each direction" (like a full duplex speakerphone allows you to both talk and listen at the same time without issue).

Thus 1000Gbps, bidirectionally simultaneously (aka "full duplex") is 2Gbps - this is a total speed calculation per line/node, NOT per direction.  100Mbps with full duplex is 200Mbps - 10Mbps with full duplex is 20Mbps, and so on.

If the card is advertised as supporting full duplex at 1Gbps, then it should have settings/code to support the claim - otherwise that is a fraud situation, and should be reported forthwith:

http://www.D-Link.com/products/?sec=1&pid=284

"Additionally, it utilizes auto- negotiation to automatically adjust to the highest supported transfer rate (up to 2Gbps in full duplex mode)."

Clearly, it says it supports 1Gbps full duplex (2Gbps) right there.  It isn't ambiguous.  Additionally, the Original Poster's screen shot shows 1Gbps.

So why are there not settings in the NIC drivers advanced properties to specifically select 1Gbps half/full mode?

Yes, he/she might be confused as to how full-duplex speeds are (not) shown or indicated in/by Windows.  He's never going to see it connected at "2Gbps" by Windows.

But that isn't the issue the the original poster brought up - which is:  "why are the SETTINGS for 1Gbps half/full duplex operational mode NOT there in the driver properties?" - a perfectly legit reasonable and obvious question, which, for some reason, the D-Link personnel seem to want to avoid acknowledging or responding to.

The OP doesn't seem to think a "driver update" will make such advanced driver properties "change".  I would submit that he/she is wrong - driver updates often change settings/availability of settings for advanced properties of drivers - network interface cards especially.  So, he/she would definitely want to install any updated drivers provided by D-Link, both to see if a new advanced options appear, and to simply have the latest "optimized" and "stable" driver scenario.

So, they should install any updated drivers, check the advanced options for 1Gbps half/full modes, if they don't exist, there is nothing lost, and he/she should submit a bug report to D-Link about the missing 1Gbps duplex settings for the driver.
