DIR-685 disconnecting for hours
« on: June 19, 2011, 08:56:56 PM »

Hi everyone,

I have searched everywhere and could not find a solution to my DIR-685 problem.

Firmware: Hardware Version : A1      Firmware Version : 1.00 (tried updating to later versions but didn't work)

I am connecting the DIR-685 to an ADSL2+ modem(pppoe). I've been using this modem for a year now and everything was perfect until 2 weeks ago. My internet will disconnect for hours and resetting both adsl and DIR-685 does not help out at all.

This seems to only happen when my DIR-685 is under heavy load. Such as heavy torrent usage. I can still access the router interface when internet is disconnected and I can see the router trying to reconnect every few seconds.

I think this is some settings or router problem as I have tried connecting my ethernet port from my computer to the adsl modem directly, everything worked fine for days. Is there a known fix to this or I am seriously thinking about buying another router?

Thanks in advance!

Hello,
You can try update firmware manually from this site h**p://w*w.station-drivers.com/page/dlink.htm hope it will helps.
I'm very disappointed about this product, mostly for that price. Too many problems, unstable internet connection - also unsecuring itself (remain open without any notification!!!), slow NAS,  no new firmwares to fix this problems just abandoned by D-link, shame.....
I'm thinking to change the router as well for something which allows me to use internet without stress;)

RKI,
Are you running the DSL Modem in bridged mode or standard mode? Does the DSL modem have a built in router or is it stand alone?
You can download firmware files directly from DLink and manually install them.

Marcel, We understand the frustrations that you having with your router, however we'd appreciate that if you want to contribute to the forum and posts, please help others out in resolving there problems and let us try and help you out in resolving your problems. Please refrain from posting about other Mfrs as it doesn't help any one out in what they already have. People have already invested time and money into there hardware. We are trying to gain a better experience for everyone here and hope that if we can't that you and others who feel they didn't get a good experience will move on and find a better experience else where.

I do understand that some routers aren't working well and hoping to get a better understanding of this router and maybe see if Dlink will listen to us and maybe find a fix. If not then, yes, you have every right to be upset with Dlink. Please voice your concerns with DLink directly or with the moderators. They do get emails if you PM them. Be respectful and informative on what the concerns are and give good details, you might find resolution. There are routers out there that works great, I enjoy my DGL-4500 and DIR-835 greatly. Maybe there is a alternative that works better for you or something we can do with your current router to make it work well for you. Lets find some alternative work around to your situation and make it better. If we can't then maybe its time to sell the router and move on. I'd be even open to take a look at your router for you and do some trouble shooting. Help us help you man.

FYI, if you think the 3700 is a lot better then anything here, you might check out there forums.

slowness NAS, very loud cooling Fan.
OK I bay Samsung SSD  but this firmware ,

off because temp is N/A and this is fine ,
but sometimes on next day firmware showing 197 `C,
and fan cooling nonstop I must restarting router.
Then I can see goodness and temp is N/A.

We must do something for fix all issues ,
but support from D-Link is poor  :'(

This is Platinum Product and price 299$,
the same price now have Playstation 3
but Sony no closing or don't shutdown services ,
like main service Framechannel.
And they fixing all issues in new firmware.

Hey is this 25 years of D-Link ???

I understand the frustration.
So can you use the router with out the fan on? Any way to turn it off?
If you put in an SSD, I would bet that you really don't need the fan as the SSD might run cooler.

It's a shame about some services shutting down. I presume that it might be worth while to look at something newer or different that handles the services that you need or look in to other services.

It's possible that if we can turn off the fan and maybe connect up a external fan to keep it cool would be a good alternative.

I think dlink has to work much harder to get the customer back. If they do nothing, it will be quiet to this board then. The router i have, there are not many problemens, en when there  are problems, they work hard to get the bug out.

I too am noticing some issue with this router (see http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=39371.0 - itmes not working in V2.00NA) but I didn't list this new issue which I think is similar to yours but not entirely.

I noticed that my xbox360 would not connect to xbox live unless I set it as the DMZ in the router.  Which is strange because I could not get other server programs to work on other PC's using the DMZ.  However, even stranger is that every time turn on my xbox360 it won't connect to xbox live until I reboot the router.  So it appears it is locking up but not the entire router function as I can still browse the web on my PC's before rebooting the router.

It's like the DMZ function just stops.  Weird.  Currently in process of RMA and will keep you posted on my results via the other thread I linked.  Good luck.

If you get a different 685 or a different router, let me know.
I think we can get the XBL set up for you.
Check out the DGL-4500 forum for XBL sticky. Just need to get it set up. It works well.

I'll check it out.  Like I said, XBL works but only with DMZ and of which sometimes (daily) requires reboot of the router before it will work.  When it is working XBL NAT is moderate.

I tried port forwarding (tcp ports 53 and 3074) and (udp ports 53, 88, and 3074) which didn't work at all (these settings worked flawlessly on my previous router - another brand name) thus resorting to DMZ.  My console is also wired not wireless.

We need to use QoS for XBL. I can help you get it set up if you like and try it if you have some.

Have you look at the dir-685 emulator?  It's not very sophisticated.  Only option under QoS Engine is Lag eliminated (VoIP, Streaming) check box.  I also have SPI disabled which often breaks voice applications on most soho routers since most VoIP calls are 400+ packets per second the processors in the cheap routers can't handle it and causes too much packet loss or latency.

p.s. Reading through my previous forum postings I just noticed and wanted to add that I now realize my posts may come off as negative and critical but I really do appreciate the talent it takes make these wonderful products.  I really hope my unit is buggy and it'a not the firmware or product line itself - it would be a shame because I think this idea is innovative and will catch on once the price drops a bit.
