I have a new HP Pavilion dv9535nr laptop which came with the Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN wireless card installed.
I upgraded my router to a D-Link DIR 655 router which is a Microsoft Centreno Cert. router. Meaning, it should be compatible with my wireless card.
Well, I've set up everything correctly in my router and in my network card adapter and still cant get the card to receive N mode. I can stand right next to the router and it won't connect in N mode. I check this via the routers settings page.
The range is better than my old linksys router. I just cant get the card to connect in 'N' mode. I've tried every setting.
Here are my Current settings:
Router : SSID (Visible) but encrypted with WPA Personal ( I seem to have problems with Vista logging onto my network in Invisible mode)
Set to transmit in N,G only (Recommended by D-link Cust. Support)
Auto set channel
Auto Set best connection speed
Enabled UPnp
Enable Multicast Streams
Enabled WISH
Priority Classifiers = Yes for - Media Center, HTTP and Auto
WMM = Enabled
Short GI = Enabled
Extra Wireless protection = Yes (Maybe i should disable this and see if it helps my transmission quality? I'm still using my WPA key)
Wireless Radio = Enabled
QoS = Enabled (Everything is checked off on that page..I haven't set up any of the rules manually though)
Wish = Enabled
WiFi Protected Set up = Disabled (I didn't wanna mess with this setting I'd prefer to just use the WPA key. And to tell you the truth, not sure how to get my older computer to accept using a pin code....or my son's Xbox 360, Wii, PSP etc.,)
Also, I have set my router address to 192.168.1.1 because I upgraded from a LinkSys WRT54GS router and didn't want to set all the firewalls on my computers in the house to accept 192.168.0.1 as my routers IP address.
Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965 wireless card:
Enable N mode = yes
N mode Channel width = auto
Ad HOC Channel = 11 (Due to the fact I cannot disable this feature)
Ad Hoc power mtg. = Disable
Ad Hoc QoS = WMM Disable (I've also tried to enable it, this is for computers or devices connecting through me via IR)
Fat Channel Intolerent = Disable (Have done as much research on this as I can and I believe its to do it Cable TV programming streams)
Mixed Mode Protection = CTS-to-Self = Enabled (????...the help file doesn't work on this adapter either...thanks Intel)
Roaming Aggressiveness = Medium
Throughput Enhancement = Disabled (Yes, I've enabled it before and saw a decrease in performance using it.)
Transmitt Power = High
Wireless Mode = 802.11g (I've tired everything from a,b,g to b,g etc., Unfortunately there is no n,g setting.)
Now, my router tells me I'm logged on it in 11g mode but when I go to a good site...like nVidia for example and download a big driver I will say...the throughput does start out high, I'm talking download speeds of like 8 megs a second then rapidly falls to 1-2 megs a second.
This is an intelligent router that adjust throughput to 'bandwidth hoggin' connections seeing how I have QoS enabled.
If anyone has any suggestions please post...thanks

Please use WPA2 to ensure N speeds. Please ensure that under WPA mode you have WPA2 only mode chosen, does it connect at N speeds then?
It does sound like you may be getting QoS'ed, if you turn off QoS what is your performance like?

I have the very same setup with my HP DV9500T and the Intel wireless abgn card. I also have a Apple TV which is wireless N capable and neither will ever attempt to connect at anything but wireless G and I have changed everything I can think of in the DIR 655 and on the devices themselves. Does the wireless N actually work in my router? Who knows I am out of options.

WPA2-AES must be used to get Draft 802.11n speeds.
I can't confirm your card can get N speeds but I can confirm the DIR-655 can get N speeds.

To touch on something I missed before in the OPs post, I noticed you mentioned Vista having problems with invisible networks. When you create a network profile in Vista there is a check box that says "connect even when not visible" or something along those lines. That check box would help your problems when SSID broadcast is disabled.
And in both cases could we limit ourselves to our primary wireless device for a short time while troubleshooting to see if it might not be a specific device in both cases. Once in that mode can we see if unprotected is any improvement?

I got it working!! Thanks man. Yes, I simply set the security setting to WPA2/AES as you suggested and bamn...I'm running at 802.11ng now. Pegged the meter all the way back on the speakeasy site!
Too bad for my sons Wii. It's either his wii or his psp that dosen't accept WPA2 for some reason. Anway, thanks again...
Now I gotta run over to the 510 media server section and see if there is some way I can use Windows Media Center with it....be nice if I could just make it a extender like my sons Xbox 360. (I just hate using Nero as my only means of getting onto that server...Vongo, Movielink don't work)
