We had the same problem, 6 switches in one week. My manager ask me to keep a spare switch in the trunk of my car, in case one when down at night.

We have found that turning off the Safeguard under the security options and updating to the latest firmware helped. But we have had one switch with the latest firmware and safeguard turn off die as of this week (Nov 24).

One thing to keep an eye, before the switch goes bad the Rx and Tx error counters start to increase a lot, at that point you should try and have  a switch ready to replace it, if that is possible. We found once the error counters start to increase and you reset the switch via the GUI or by removing the power cord, switch won’t come back it will lock up (all the lights go red).

We could not resolve the issue, you will need to call Dlink and get an RMA.  If you check the switch, its most likely H/W Ver.:A1, the replacement switches that we got from Dlink was H/W Ver.:A2 and have had no problems with them.

Any time you have a switch that is 100% lit up with nothing attached and the problem is not resolved with a reset it is time for am RMA.

I am sorry the both of you have had so many failures with the DES-1228P.  D-Link will honour it's warranty, call in with the defective S/Ns and we will get you RMAs ASAP.

Sorry, Fatman, didn't mean to sound negative, I have RMA all of the switches I had problems with and have never had any issues with Dlink honoring the warranty. Just put some tips I used to minimize down time.

And the tips were much appreciated.

I just wanted to throw that out there because if this becomes a thread that attracts all people having problems with their switches I want them to know that if their switch looks more like a Christmas tree it's beyond repair.

I've replaced several also... seems to be all the A1 versions...others have been OK so far.. Just keep plenty of spares and one in the truck at all times, thats for sure. Other than that they are a great switch, except when you have to put one in a closet or open office, the noise of the fans bothers people :)

These units are starting to really scare me.

Here is my experience so far.

4 DES-1228P Switches installed 02/08 (all A1 HW)

*3 have failed. (All lights stuck on/Replaced by Dlink with A2 switches)
*1 Replaced (A2) switch failed and took down my entire network/interfered with other switches/nics (switch had no lights but fans were running)

We have had 4 go bad in the last few months.
All where HW A1. Luckily we keep a couple spares
handy and D-Link has good RMA policies.

I just had my DES-1228P A1 die with all lights lit up and putting thru an RMA today.
Its making me a bit uneasy seeing so many other failures reported.  I'm glad that only my wireless is connected thru the switch and nothing else on the ports but since it takes down all my WiFi I can not have this happen more then once.  If this happens again I think the response will be to drop Dlink and move to another vendor.

I was hoping that it was just an A1 version issue but the above post about the A2 doing the same is not making me feel any better.

Another one just died. Here is the tally:

(4) A1's have died
(1) A2 has died (this was a replacement)

THIS IS JUST CRAZY!! THE WORST PART IS SUPPORT DOES NOT ADMIT TO ANY FLAW WITH THE DEVICE. JUST MY BAD LUCK!!!?!?!?! I SAY BS. I WANT AN EXPLANATION!!

We purchased 3 March 08.  All 3 have been RMA'ed due to this problem.  Now this weekend one of our replacement switches (A2) has quit.  It wouldn't be so bad if it didn't require a complete unit replacement to fix.  If you use these switches you must have a spare at all times.

Just had a failure with an A2. This was one of the replacements for a failed A1.
Luckily we had a spare on the shelf.
Failures per version
A1-6 most where S/W version 1.20.08
A couple where S/W version 1.20.12
A2-3 all where S/W version 1.30.15

Ok, so I'm updating from my earlier post.

(6) A1's later
and (2) a2's later

This has gotten out of hand!
Last sunday I got a call from 2 properties that were down, both were des-1228p's....
One was a1, one was a2

sometimes they die with all lights on, sometimes they die with all red lights on only...

I'm going to really ***** to dlink today when I rma this one...at this point these things are so unreliable, I need them to provide a replacement product... I keep 2 spares, but I find myself using the 2 spares quickly with this unreliability factor....

On the other hand, I have plenty of des-1526p's out there that have been in for years and flawless...

I wonder if it's a problem with the PS or what causes this, obviously dlink cannot figure it out, or refuses to make adjustments to manufacturing them.

I don't know what word got replaced by asterisks, but I can only assume it shouldn't have been censored.

Please do speak to your concerns when you call in for your RMA.

I was told to come on this board and post my concerns, which  I already did. Who do I need to talk to, to get somewhere? I can't keep replacing these switches over and over again.

Please PM me the name of the person who directed you to the boards if you have that information.

This is a place for D-Link users to interact, share stories and assist each other with the helpful hand of D-Link standing by to occasionally assist.  Complaints made here are not official and are not going to be read (most likely) by anyone with the ability to do anything substantive to assist you.

Our CS/RMA departments are the only place that could take an official complaint and they would be the only place in D-Link with the ability to redress your concerns.  I would take your RMA case ID(s) from tech support and then call them over the phone.  Give me the heads up if you need the number but it sounds like you already have it.

Figured I would join the fray as well.  Bought this switch for home as the primary switch.  I just received in my 2ed replacement in under a year.  Luckly D-Links RMA dept is easy to work with to get a replacement but it still sucks that my whole network is down for week while I wait for a replacement.  I am just a home user so I cannot afford to keep another one around.  Next time I think I will just buy a bunch of cheap SMC switches and POE injectors so I can afford to have spares.

Just replaced another one this weekend. Getting sick of 2 hour drives to replace them... guess I am going to ditch d-link. Such a shame, we were starting to sell a lot of their products, but after this bull, and no action on -dlinks part to correct it, I can't keep selling their products

We installed four DES-1228P switches just over a year ago.  So far we've had to replace them six times.  One is being replaced right now.

They're not just used for PCs.  Our phone system relies on them as well, as does our Visa machines.  When a switch dies, it takes down a large part of our company for half a day.

This can't continue.  Telling people to simply RMA the switches isn't enough.  We can't keep having this down-time.  With a life-span of weeks, they're worthless once the warranty runs out.

It's obvious from reading this thread that this is normal for the DES-1228P.  I'll be polite and merely call the model a lemon.

Will there be a recall, or any other means of addressing the DES-1228P problem?  Or is this normal for D-Link in general?

lost another switch yesterday afternoon. We are unable to keep any
stock as the failure rate with these switches is excessive.  >:(

 :(

Our DES-1228P died this morning - all lights lit up and reset doesn't fix the issue.  Luckily, I have a 7-year old spare switch that I can use as a backup.  I guess this was a bad choice.  Purchased last November.  I'll be calling for an RMA.

Another switch just died, half the company is down right now.

We don't have a spare - it's already in use while another switch is replaced.

Of our four D-Link switches, we've had seven die in just over a year.  Others in this thread have shown this to be normal behavior.  There's no recall and D-Link is silent on the issue, so I can only assume that this GARBAGE is typical of all D-Link hardware.

I have always used dlink switches for our agency.  Until the 1228P I haven't had a problem.  Unfortunately this batch has been horrible.  9 out of 11 switches have been RMAd as well as 2 of the newer replacements.  The two that have survived are in the coolest data closet being around 65 at all times.

We finally had our vendor replace all our D-Link switches with another model.  With D-Link treating a >100% failure rate as perfectly normal behavior, it was the only option.

Ha!! My latest replacements showed up. One looks like it just came back from Iraq and has huge beat up rubber feet on them the previous customer must have installed.  Classy operations D-Link!

Also. The box didn't have the CD bracket screws etc.  Watch I'll probably get charged for that stuff. Last time they had the nerve to charge me for friggin rubber feet. This is crazy.

I had 8 Trendnet PoE 24 ports similar to DES-1228P.  They all failed 2 times or more.  They gave me refund.  I replace them with DES-1228P and Linksys Poe switches.  The DES-1228P were the new hardware version.  Already 6 have failed of the DES-1228P in less than 6 month.  They send the replacement via 3rd class mail which takes 3 or 4 weeks to arrive.  The boxes are received in bad shape (I already replace the customer with a new unit).   We have 3 Linksys/Cisco with no failure.  The only issue is that Cisco/Linksys removed the 24 port out of the market and the  new unit has only 12 PoE ports.

Dlink they do not provide any solution besides replacing them.  The cost of shipping this units is $35 each and Dlink should refund this expense and provide a faster replacement free of charge.

The key to owning a D-Link switch is to collect Air Miles off the shipping charges each time you send a switch back for repair.  If you own four or more switches, by the time the warranty runs out you've paid for a trip to Europe and back.

Guys, I've had it... Just got 2 service calls in the past 2 days, both DES-1228P's that went bad. I'm tired of paying shipping, tired of keeping multiple spares on the truck. I'm calling D-Link today, if they don't offer to replace all of the switches with a model that works, I will be seeking everyone effected for a class action lawsuit. We have a great case on our hands, we have all been cheated shipping charges, loss of business, and many more damages, and D-Link refuses to do anything about it.  Has everyone kept a good record of how many they have returned, and all of the charges they have incurred?

This sub-forum is your best evidence that everyone is having this problem; that it's not you doing something wrong.  You might want to save a copy of each page in case they take it down.

The RMA we received was missing the following parts:

1 x AC Power Cord - $15
1 x Bracket - $20
1 x Flat head Screw M3*6 - $3

That's the icing on the cake!

Just had me replacment unit bite the dust taking down my Wireless network.  And since I am using the DLink AP's designed around this switch I have to replace all the AP's to move to another switch.  I knew I should have spent a little extra $$ and went with the cisco, HP or 3com setups.

And the one that died this time was HW Ver A2 F/W Ver 1.30.15

Just had another one bite the dust. this is the 3rd time for this customer, 3rd replacement... Anyone at D-link want to call me and do some damage control, before I start a class action lawsuit? Conveniently this customer that it keeps happening to is a law office.

Anyone interested in joining a class action suit if I get one going?

D-Link doesn't seem to care otherwise... and we have all been RIPPED OFF!

Sorry I can't help out with the lawsuit - our company washed our hands of the D-Link fiasco.

We made our distributor take them back.  It was impossible for them to deny that the D-Links were >100% failure rate garbage, that others found them to be garbage, and that D-Link policy is to simply ignore the problem and the users.

Instead I've posted word to a few other networking/tech forums to warn others.

I purchased three of these units in March. One failed within two months of being put into service. The second failed three months into service. This evening the third one has bit the dust after six months.  Imagine my displeasure at finding a thread like this indicating the widespread problem with these devices. Looks like I had best invest in a different brand of unit for the next round of failures that will occur with the RMA replacements.

Not sure anyone is still reading this thread... but just in case...

I have a DES-1228P that's been in service for close to 2+ years now... almost 3 years, if memory serves me right.

Very little load and so far... so good.
(fingers crossed after reading this link)

I "think" ths issue at hand is the Power Supplies.
I say this because I also have (26) DES-3526 switches.... of which 17 of them have been RMA'd and replaced.

After 2 years of use... they started dying in waves.
We determined, from testing, that it was the power supplies that checked out.

It took 5 RMA's and a chatty RMA Tech to finally hear the words I was wanting to hear.....
They were aware of the Power Supply issue and were changing over to a new version.

In the DES-3526 case... HW versions had nothing to do with it....
If it had the old P/S.... it did or would eventually fail.
The P/S rev1 finally got replaced with P/S rev2.
They are marked as such.

I don't bother with RMA's and shipping back the units anymore.
Instead, DLink just shipps me spare P/S rev2 and I replace them myself.
Saves shipping on both ends.

Any RMA that I get back, or any new switch I purchase, I always open up to ensure it has the new power supply, since some of my installs are over 8 hours away.  Otherwise it doesn't go out.

I've never opened up the DES-1228P to see what it has for a power supply.... and I doubt that it's the same one as the DES-3526...
But given the fact that DLink is having P/S issues.... it wouldn't be a shock to hear that the DES-1228P suffers from the same issues!

Anyhow... something to think about and ask the RMA Dept next time you have one tank.
