DIR-857 Question re: Using both bands
« on: April 09, 2012, 06:38:49 PM »

Just bought a DIR-857 and love it so far. It is downstairs, where I also have my PS3 connected wirelessly on Band 1 (which is 2.4). Upstairs I have an iPhone, iPad, Samsung Galaxy S2, Android Tablet, Netbook and Laptop all also connected on Band 1. I haven't had any problems with any of these devices at all even though they all share one band.

The second band I use for my Apple TV upstairs and use it to stream Netflix, MLB.TV, etc. It runs really nice most of the time. I only have 60% signal to the Apple TV so it does get a bit choppy intermittently, but I'm sure I could get a booster or something to counter that.

My question is, however - after I set up the Apple TV on Band 2, Band 2 all of a sudden would not show up as a choice to connect to ANYWHERE anymore. Not from laptops, phones, nothing. Once you assign your 5 ghz band to a device, does it take it away, so that you can only assign it to one device? Just looking for a bit more background on this. I like the way it is set up anyway but just want more understanding on it.

Also can anyone recommend a good 5 ghz booster?

Thanks!!

The 5GHz band behaves like the 2.4. So even if your Apple TV is connected to the 5GHz band, it should still be available for other devices to connect on the 5GHz band. Your case is unique and I don't have any suggestions for troubleshooting since I've never seen that behaviour before.

Could just be a fluke and you may need to just spend a little more time investigating.

As for the 5GHz band it has some good advantages and disadvantages:

Advantage:
- No channel overlap so you can easily get 300-450Mbps
- Less interference
- Less congestion
- Excellent for close to medium range

Disadvantage:
-Not every device supports 5GHz band
- Does not penetrate through walls as well as the 2.4GHz band
-It is terrible for long distances

The great thing with Dual Band is you get the best of both worlds.

Some things to try:
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.
