If you look at http://www.dlink.com/us/en/home-solutions/support/product/dir-857-dualband-hd-media-router there's a warning that this firmware is for the North American market only, is there a difference in hardware and/or software for the DIR-857?
I downloaded and installed the 1.02 firmware from ftp.dlink.com and it sure works even thought I'm located in europe...

The hardware specifications and/or local requirements for specific regions may vary across different parts of the globe. As a general rule of thumb, you should only install firmware on your D-Link device that was released for the region in which you purchased the device. That said, it is possible that firmware from other regions will work without issue, but D-Link does not warrant/advocate mixing/matching firmware, so D-Link owners who choose this approach do so at their own risk.

Also there are wireless regulations and differences between NA and EU and other regions. This effects how wireless is implemented and operates on your router. Your probably not getting the correct wireless functions meant for your region. I have tried an EU beta on my 645. Didn't work well even though the wireless options were different. I wouldn't put a region thats not specified on your router, would probably void your warranty.  :o
