D-link DIR-880L problems
« on: December 29, 2015, 01:13:10 PM »

New router, been online for just a few weeks.

hardware info: d-link DIR-880L HW:A1 FW:1.05WW

problem:  Devices randomly lose wirelesss connection to this router.  devices report that they can not obtain a valid IP address.  Happens on both 2.4mhz and 5.0mhz.  I have to power cycle the router and all is working again for a day or two.  I have tried moving all devices to 2.4 and then 5.0 with no cure to the problem.  Disabled all wireless security, no help.  Problem manifests on 2 android phones, 2 laptops, kindle fire, ruko stick, and amazon fire stick.

right now I am testing using static ip addresses for the all of the devices that will allow a config for static ip.  This may be helping, but need a few more days testing.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Link>Welcome!

  • What region are you located?
  • Has a Factory Reset been performed?
  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?

  • Was the router working before any firmware updates?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router. Besure to log into the Admin account on the router.
  • Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting and maintain consistency for applications that need to connect as well as mapped drives.
  • Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
  • If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only under Setup/IPv6.
  • For routers with Smart Connect Technology , try disabling this feature and test. Under Wireless.

Region: USA
No factory reset has been performed yet.
Factory reset not performed before or after firmware update, nor was it setup from scratch. I put the latest firmware on the router during initial install.
Unknown if the router was working correctly before firmware updates as I installed the latest firmware on the router during initial install.
ISP: Rural Wireless internet
ISP hardware: Ubiquiti wireless radio/antenna - unknown model
All devices set to static IP address
IPv6 set to local connection several weeks ago during initial install
Smart Connect Tech disabled several weeks ago during initial install

Lets try a factory reset.
Are the static IP addresses out side of the default DHCP IP address pool?

  • Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by that maybe causing interferences?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area that maybe causing interferences? Link> Use a WiFi Scanner to find out. How many?

No cordless house phones within 1 mile.  No other WiFi APs within 1 mile other than my rural wireless antenna, which does not show up when I scan.
No other WiFI routers within 1 mile.  I am a rural customer.  My nearest neighbor is at least 1 mile away.
I have a WiFi scanner on my phone and no other devices are detected other than my dir-880l.

so far the static IP addresses have fixed the problem.  why is dynamic an issue and what can I do to fix?

Not sure if there is a fix or if there was a mis-configuration on the DHCP side by using static IPs with in the DHCP pool instead of out side. Outside is always preferred. Only issues i've seen are some reservation limitations on the 880L. All of my devices work as Dynamic connected clients.

There are some known bugs on v1.05 and I have made D-Link aware of them. Please be patient.
