using 601 as access point for xbox 360
« on: January 07, 2012, 08:55:59 PM »

I've moved into a new apartment with a couple of people who already have wifi set up.  They are adament about me not running a ethernet cable across the apartment to my room for my xbox 360.  I have a DIR-601 from my last apartment, and I am wondering if there is a way to set up the router as an access point that allows me to connect to the existing wifi network and then wire my xbox 360 in.  Can anyone help me?

that thread is for using the router as a second wifi broadcasting access point.  It requires me to connect an ethernet cable to the 601.  I can't do this because my roommates don't want me running an ethernet cable across the place.  If I could, I would just run it directly to the xbox and not even use the 601.

I want to use the 601 to receive the wifi signal from the other router, then connect the xbox 360, via ethernet, to 601.

The 601 will not work in this case, You'll need to probably get a DAP model AP that has bridging or repeating capabilities, I think the DAP-1360 or 1522 has repeating capabilities. I don't have any experience with them in gaming so I'm not sure if that would work well for gaming in this configuration.

Any chance of the roommate letting you run a hidden wired up the walls thru ceiling and down to your room? This a house or Apt?

I have a similar situation.  I believe you can set up the DIR-601 as a wireless repeater using DD-WRT firmware.  I haven't tried it, but understand that it's possible.

As near as I can tell, it cannot be done with stock firmware.
