Just installed a new DIR-857 and everything seems fine so far but was wondering about the Wireless 5g range. Overall the wireless on both 2.4/5g are about 20% better than my DGL-4500. But the 5g still is 20% less in range than the 2.4g just like my DGL-4500. For example, where I get 80% signal strength on 2.4g the same device will only get 60% on 5g. I thought 5g was suppose to be better. I've tried all the channels and they all are pretty much the same. I even mounted it on the wall where I had my DGL-4500. So is this normal?

5Ghz is best for line of sight operation, and is effected by building materials and such due to it's high frequency attenuation. This is the nature of the beast and it effects all Mfrs of 5Ghz routers.
Hope it works out well for you. You should turn that DGL-4500 in to an AP now. ;)

I'll keep the DGL-4500 as is for a backup incase the DIR-857 takes a dump. Wish I could use the 4500 as a wireless bridge to 857.

You could do this. Save off the current router configuration to file on the 4500. Then configure it for AP mode. Save another configuration file on the 4500. You'll have to configuration files so if you want to use the 4500 as an AP and you have to use it as a host router, just load the saved configuration file for the router operation and connect the wires. ;)

My first 857 took a "BIG" dump right out of the box!! Returned it, and the second 857 is rock solid (thanks to my buddy FURRY)!! ;D

Since you have a good working 857 now, I think it's time to move on from the 1st one sir. I think we all know your first one didn't work, PEBKAC ::) , and you have a good working 2nd one now. ;)
