5 GHz connection problem
« on: March 26, 2013, 12:50:35 PM »

I just bought a new D-Link dir 865l, configured it, both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies. But I have a small problem.
I am unable to see or connect to the 5GHz connection on laptops, if I don't plug in the Wireless AC Dualband Adapter. On a Macbook or an Ipad it is visible and I can connect to it,  but not on laptops or other devices that have Windows or Android as OS.
I don't get it. Is this normal? Do you need the adapter to be able to use 5GHz connections?

Link>Welcome!
What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?

You need to refer the the Mfr support information on what your devices support in regards to 5Ghz radio support. Some devices only support 2.4Ghz WiFi radios. http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=53158.0

Where did you get v1.04 from?
I'm showing only the following version being available for your region:
v1.01 b06 2012-07-19

Where was this unit purchased? Online or at a local store and did the router come with this re-loaded like this?

Reason for asking is that there are certain regions that only support the use of regional FW versions due to the fact that each region has different networking and WiFi requirements. DLink has to follow these requirements thus creating different regions of FW. So NA region FW can not be used in EU regions.

We need to establish where this unit came from. If it came from the EU region then I would recommend as first test would be to downgrade the router using that is officially posted on the SE web site.

Interesting.
Wonder if it came from Mfr like that or not.  ???

You need to refer the the Mfr support information on what your devices support in regards to 5Ghz radio support. Some devices only support 2.4Ghz WiFi radios. http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=53158.0

Lets verify that any of your client devices actually support the 5Ghz radio. If it does, then maybe you might consider downgrading FW to what is offically posted.

Seems like my laptop doesn't support 5ghz, so I have to use the adapter if I want to connect to that frequency.
Thx for the help!

DLink has some 5Ghz adapters; Check out the links here if you need some suggestions:

Very well. Not such a big speed difference between the 2 frequencies, but at least it's not something worse hehe

Just think of the 5Ghz has a different pipe, might be bigger however doesn't necessarily make it faster.  ;)
