Title: Suggestions for Firmware version 1.05
Post by: gugaucb on December 13, 2007, 04:05:59 AM
DLink would add the option to we ability the Domain master and Domain logon in samba server of DNS-323.

It need change this variables below:

To let samba act as a logon-server for windows clients.
   domain logons = Yes
   domain master = Yes
# For a specific logon script per user
   logon script = %U.bat
# For a specific logon script per machine
   logon script = %m.bat
# To add machine-accounts on the fly.
   add user script = /usr/sbin/useradd -g nogroup -c "NT Machine Account" -d /var/lib/samba -s /bin/false %m$

# Set the home directory location to the users home on this server.
   logon home = \\%L\%U
# Store the profiles of Microsoft Windows(r) NT systems in a dot hided
# subdirectory.
   logon path = \\%L\%U\.msprofile

# Where to store the logon scripts.
[netlogon]
   comment = Network Logon Service
   path = /var/lib/samba/netlogon

Schedule download
1) I recommend up to the URL lenght. I have many URLs that I couldn't download for reason;
2) If possible implement download resume;
3) I need control how much time the DNS-323 wait the download response.
4) Implement the order of files will be download. When the first finish, another start.
5) Include bitTorrent client (same MLDonkey)

A web-server for browsing and viewing pictures would be nice. Thumbnails and slideshow.
The FTP server is a bit a bit burdensome for finding and viewing pictures.

1st : Fully working upnp server (As it's advertised since it's mostly why I bought it beside network storage)
2nd : Secure FTP (sftp since regular ftp is way too unsafe for use outside a LAN)
3rd : Web server (optional, would be nice!)

I think thats would be enough since it's only a home server, not a fully featured PC...

How about a furry bunny shipped with every new DNS!  Then people will be SURE to love the product!

I must be cynical..   somehow I doubt we'll see more then one last firmware release..  or that anything requested will be in it.  I see these threads all over the internet.. and you know, not once, since the dawn of the internet have I ever seen one request put in...

But.. ya.   Maybe I'm just cynical.

:)

Up until now the issue has been 'requests lost in translation'. Now that we have live forums where both users and D-Link Employees can communicate it is much easier for users to make requests. D-Link DOES take requests into account however not all requests are capable of being implemented nor necessarily plausible depending on the devices intended function.

The comments above are very good and we hope that those interested in seeing their device do more should post their ideas/comments on what they would like to see in a D-Link Storage device.

I think I missed something, whats the utility of a proxy server again?

TFTP stands for Trivial File Transfer Protocol, why bother with the Trivial version of something already supported?  And if you answer that it's so you can put all of your switch configs and firmware (the only use I know of for TFTP anymore) on your home storage enclosure then that does not work.

iSCSI, thats amusing, have you seen D-Link's iSCSI product line?  Let me give everyone some links for amusement value.

D-Link's page for their bottom of the line iSCSI solution
http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=534

A Froogle search for that same bottom of the line device.  Tinyurl is used to avoid screen clutter.  You can use the preview to see what I am sending you to or you can use the direct link.
http://preview.tinyurl.com/339dep
http://tinyurl.com/339dep

Why would D-Link offer a feature that makes their 5K device (which is cheap for what it is) so unique and rare and put it on a 150 dollar device?

The rest of these features look solid though.  I would love to see any of them.

TFTP is also used for boot images - have you ever had the need to reload a dozen or so workstations with a new OS?

Well - here's one way to do it - load the operating system, service packs, applications, antivirus etc. once, create an image, store it on your tftp server and then reimage the remaining eleven, automatically, whilst you sleep.

I would like to see a simple IP ACLs.

Example:
PERMIT 192.168.1.0/24 -> IP_OF_DNS323 (ALL_SERVICES)
PERMIT 0.0.0.0/0 -> IP_OF_DNS323 (FTP_SERVICE)
DENY 0.0.0.0/0 -> IP_OF_DNS323 (ALL_SERVICES)

Additional security facilities such as SFTP (FTP over SSL) with ACLs would make more secure for internet use.

Another request ....
My old NAS that i sold on e-bay was a Buffalo. It have a good feature : Backup to USB drive ...
It's look like the sceduler, but with 1 important thing : it give you a status of the copy in a TXT file. The name of the TXT file is the current backup date, and it'S located in the root of the location where the copy is.

More backup run, more TXT file give the list of the copied file.

I did'nt find anything that can confirm me that the copy as been done successful, and which file as been copied. Having a list are a good feature. Actually, i only see the "?" icon on the Scheduler status tab.

Here the request :
- The Scheduler must create a status (in TXT file, located somewhere on the NAS), that include all perform action in each task, result good or bad. It help finding problems (like error connection, drive not working, out of space,...)
The reason why to have this TXT file is also to valid that the incremental scheduler works fine. For now, i think the schedule copy everything over and over, instead of copy only the modify file.

Another request :
- Support UPS : The other Buffalo product support this feature, so when we only have 5 min left on the UPS, the NAS shutdown (correctly !!!). So no problems with the file struction because the device shutdown correctly !!!

More HDD managment options.  I started with a single 750G HDD.  When I added the 2nd 750G it only allowed me to created a 2nd volume.  I would like to see the ability to concat the volumes or mirror without lossing the data on the 1st disk.

if you added a 2nd HD and tried to combine, you went JBOD and or RAID0. you would not be able to mirror as you would lose data on at least 1 HD (RAID1).

When adding a 2nd 750GB drive (new no data) I wanted to grow the volume (JBOD) by using a concat.  The DNS 323 does not allow you to grow the volume to 1.5TB it only allowed me to add a 2nd volume of 750GB.  The ability of growing the volume would be nice in 1.05.

Also when adding a 2nd 750GB disk (new no data) I wanted to be presented with the option of mirror the data from the 1st disk onto the 2nd.  This would also be a nice feature in 1.05.

How about firmware revision 1.04 first  :P

The reason this topic is still active is because 1.04 is FINAL on what features it will have. There is no reason to not have an active topic on what features can be added in the next revision since 1.04 is locked down and is going through quality control testing.

What is the targeted firmware development cycle time for 1.05?  It seems the first three firmware updates
were coming out at two month intervals; however, v1.04 has been 9+ months in the making.

No target as of yet until we can get 1.04 rolled out. 1.05 key feature will be the addition of BitTorrent support. The faster we get feature requests and bug submissions from users prior to development then the faster we can brainstorm on what can be added to 1.05.

Better AV UPNP server (Twonky???) this was the main reason I bought the unit

Well, I've raised these issues on other threads in the forum, but not here.
So I'll repeat myself, in hopes of feature consideration for FW1.05

 - journaling file system
 - UPS support

Oh, and bring back the 2 month firmware release cycle

Where I said Better AV UPNP server the main idea was:
- Better DNLA support
- full support to more media player clients (including DLink's 510)
- possibility to define multiple folders as media sources and define the type of media (Video, Music, Photo or All)
- support for internet radio
- support for internet TV (IPTV, active-tv)
- ability to provide media picture identification for music and video (covers)

I think this may have been previously mentioned / suggested, but improved admin capability of FTP rights would be great. It would be nice to specify multiple sets of rights -- e.g., read-only access to directory "A", read-write to directory "B".

No target as of yet until we can get 1.04 rolled out. 1.05 key feature will be the addition of BitTorrent support. The faster we get feature requests and bug submissions from users prior to development then the faster we can brainstorm on what can be added to 1.05.

Actually just thought of another suggestion / possible bug fix. I've noticed that from a cold start (e.g., power-on) the fan on the DNS-323 will not run until such a time as it is needed to moderate the internal temperature of the unit. After that point, the fan will never shut down, even if the drives have been spun-down for hours. I've read that the sleep mode power consumption of the unit is next to nothing, so I find it hard to believe that the fan is required to keep the temperature down. Is this a possible bug? Either way, something that would be great to have fixed in 1.0.5. Thanks.

I also really would like the DNS-323 to work with my PS3.  This is the reason I purchased the 323 assuming that UPNP was all that was required.  If the lack of DLNA support is the cause then that's what I need the most.

I thought that UPnP-AV to the PS3 was supposed to work so I took a DNS-323 home last night and dropped an album on it.  I then proceeded to play the entire album through without difficulty from my PS3.  The only problem I had was when I tried to play the song before it had finished building the media database.  This did produce an DLNA error, however I did not get a single error after it finished.

Now if my test wasn't comprehensive enough (I didn't have much time last night) for some reason or there was a particular type of media you were looking for I can try that.

For the record the music was the album "Alright, Stil" by Lily Allen and was encoded as a MP3 at 320 Kbps.

Browsing through the music and queuing up individual songs did take a while, but this has always been true with the PS3 for me (one of the reasons I don't use a media extender, near as I can tell UPnP-AV is just slow).

Fatman - What firmware was the DNS-323 using?  What firmware was your PS3 using?
Title: Re: Suggestions for Firmware version 1.05
Post by: Fatman on January 22, 2008, 12:51:39 PM
The PS3 was running the latest update as of a "Check for Updates" on the PS3 as of last night 1/21/2008 at 9pm PST.  I vaguely remember it being like 2.13 or something, the update that happened what seems like a month ago was the last.

The DNS-323 was... well it turns out thats a good story.  I was mistaken it turns out, I would have swore that it had 1.03 loaded on it, I was wrong, it had a pre-release copy of 1.04.

I don't normally work with the DNS-323 so I spoke with the guy who moderates this board (and happens to be the foremost expert on the product) and he said that 1.03 should not work for me.  Time to give it a shot at home, see if I can't make the round peg fit in the square hole (I have a big sledge for the job).

I will be trying again tonight with 1.03 this time, I will also get my exact PS3 firmware.  The good news is that assuming this build of 1.04 ever becomes public it will be fixed!  While I'm at it any more specific tests?

Unfortunately I do not own a Xbox 360 or I would try that too.

1)  UPS support.
2)  Optional auto power on.
3)  Windows domain integration.
4)  Put back the scandisk & defrag.
5)  Better disk failure/error checking.
6)  S.M.A.R.T monitoring for the disks.

I thought I'd add one more to my wish list, and one more

7)  Support for external USB disks.
8)  Wake-on-LAN - this should actually be easier than #2 above

Here is my wish list

1) Ability to send email alerts through Sympatico (Secure) email service. Apparently email configuration on DNS prevents this from happening.

2) Ability to launch *.exe files from a mapped drive in Windows Vista. Current version (1.04) works for some folks and not for others. I have to execute *.exe's via the FTP service.

Suggestion :

1 - Fix what V1.04 broke (lost printer)
2 - Fix the Scheduler (incremental)

With SecondCopy 7, i can start incremental backup from Drive_1 to Drive_2 : it took less than 10 min to scan both Drive, and copy the material for only 10 meg of new material.
With the Incremental function on the Sceduler of the DNS-323 ... after 2 hours, these drive are still working.. It seem more a "full" backup that an incremental Backup.

Is this Scheduler really works ?

My wishes are by order of preference.

1. I wish I could easily connect USB drives to the DNS-323 unit. This is particularly important for making backups of the files on the unit, and to backup many gigabytes of files takes hours (or even days). This could also be useful, of course, to share another drive on the network. Even better, would be to also allow to connect the drive directly, with USB to a computer.

2. I wish it would exist a web access to the FTP server. The company where I work has a firewall and without web access I can't access my files.

3. I wish there would be a way not only to schedule the download of files, through an FTP server, but also, to schedule the upload of files through FTP. This is useful again for making automatic backups, maybe even to remote servers on the net.

4. Possibility to edit the itunes server playlists right from the admin panel (it's a text file, I'm sure it's easy to allow this). Right now itunes server only gives us a huge list of musics. Other option, would be, of course, for the box by default to provide us with more playlists (ex: 90's, 80's, top rated, recently added, recently played, top 25, genre, rating, artist).

5. I wish there was a way to use the http server (goahead web server) that comes with the DNS-323 to host our own simple websites (asking PHP and MySql is probably too much, but of course, they would be welcome).

6. Automatic mirror bakckup with other D-Link products (ex: another DNS-323 or the DNS-313).

7. Encryption. I have no idea how this could be done or if it can be done. But I believe it would be interesting to have some automatic encryption on every file saved.  If someone turned off the drive, the password would have to be entered again. This is useful in case somebody steals our DNS-323.

I second the FTP logging.  At minimum I would like to know who is connected to the ftp server.

Better Vista UAC support

Cannot run .exe from Vista Home Premium with UAC activated!!!

Better Print Server

A print server that works and with more control than just "empty queue"

You're asking D-Link to fix Vista, shouldn't you be asking Microsoft?

User Access Control is a part of Microsoft's new & improved security - it's designed to prevent things from running unless you specifically permit them to, so what you need to do is contact Microsoft to find out how to set UAC to permit the .exe to run.

Paraphrasing from that Mac commercial -

Windows is trying to run an application from a remote device - cancel or allow?

You have to find a way to ensure the response is "allow".

Hi fordem what smart asnwer!!!

DLink and others do not need to sell treir products to people using Vista. You are right!!!

Man I'm not protecting MS but what I'm asking is a product with a good version o Samba installed and that give me the right to use my client machine.

I need to print 1.4 broke the Samba printer server.

And if they want to sell more DNS-323 they need to work with Vista, sorry if this reality bugs you.

Just to compllete : What DLink needs to do is to put a up to date can if possible more configurable version of Samba at FW 1.5. Remember Samba was created to give "Windows" file server capabilities to Linux machines because they want to serve the Windows client base.

I'm just asking for a good implementation of Samba this will solve this problem and the printer server problem also.

I'm dead serious - UAC preventing an .exe from running is not something that D-Link needs to fix.  If you can get the .exe to run by disabling UAC, then what needs to be done is the permissions on UAC set correctly, not expect D-Link to find a away to defeat UAC - it is a configuration problem which YOU need to take up with Microsoft.

Also for what it's worth - I'm running 1.04 and the print server works for me and  with exactly the same settings that it did with 1.03.

In all probability it is a permission setting again, caused by the upgrade to a newer version of SAMBA.

These are the quirks of linux in a Windows environment.  The reason that low cost NAS manufacturers use linux is to keep the cost low, Microsoft charges a license fee to use their OS - perhaps if you want/need seamless integration in a Windows environment, what you need is a "powered by Windows" NAS, runing Microsoft Storage Server, but be warned, expect to pay more.

Like it or not, your choices essentially are to pay for the compatibility or to live with the quirks and incompatibilities of open source.

By the way - does D-Link advertise the DNS-323 as being compatibile with Vista?

Forbem

I agree with you but in part. Unfortunately I need to use windows since my simulation software just runs on this platform.

The point that I do not agree is to provide a new firmware with breaks the print server, since lots of people are having the same issue.

I tried 5 different printers (2 mine 3 from friends) and used XP and Vista (without UAC) without lucky.

I reverted back to 1.3 and had all printers working from XP and Vista.

Just asking DLink to give us a better debuged firmware.

Cheers

Modify the emailed disk space report so that it shows the change in space since the last report, this way you can see not only who much space is used/available but how rapidly it is changing, without having to keep notes.

One additional wish:

- Using an application like rsync http://samba.anu.edu.au/rsync/ (http://samba.anu.edu.au/rsync/) to synchronize documents between network drives (and even, internet sites);

I need to format one of my 2 HArd drives.
It's impossible. I'm obliged to open the box, to let just one HArd drive inside and then format.
Pffffff
I've got a bug that not allow me to delete files on the second disk. :(

Fix bug of DNS-323 behind a NATing device, such as a firewall. FTP service from WAN is somehow inaccessible. Also fix network sharing under different users (must log as a different user, otherwise share inaccessible too).  Cannot modify an account when created, must delete and start over again... ouash...

Can you provide details of this "bug" - I've had no problems accessing my DNS-323 by ftp with it behind a NAT device.

It would be great to have the functionality of the ftp user passwords to be more complicated.

Also it would be great to have a http://www.clamav.net/ as an anti virus built into the DNS-323 so that it will scan device when scheduled.  Also you can set a particular folder on one of your hd's to be the virus definition folder.

I would like to see the following functionality in the next version of DNS-323 firmware:

1.  More granular control of formatting hard drives.  I would like to be able to choose raid level separately from formatting.  I would like to be able to format each drive individually at any time.

2.  NFS and NIS support.  I would like to be able to configure the DNS-323 to be part of an NIS domain and to fully support NFS

3.  More Samba features.  I'd like the ability to use the DNS-323 as a WINS server, as a master local browser, and  ;D even as an NT4 style domain controller  ;D

4.  The ability to join the DNS-323 to a Windows Active Directory or another Samba domain.

5.  A backup scheduling feature that actually worked.  The current version doesn't seem to work unless I manually tell it to download.  I would also like the ability to receive an email confirmation that the device ran the backup and what files were copied.

6.  The ability to add a user to more than one group

7.  SCP, SSH, and SFTP.  I'd also like to be able to set the device up as a TFTP server to host firmware and router configuration files.

8.  The ability to enter some sort of "advanced" mode and actually be able to edit and save the various configuration files (e.g. smb.conf, etc)

9.  Syslog support.  I'd like the device to send log messages to a remote syslog server

10.  The ability to use the USB port to attach an external backup.  This would increase the DNS-323's capabilities for small businesses and complex home networks because it would simplify backup creation.  This would be an especially good feature when combined with the enhanced backup capabilities mentioned above.

My 1st post  ;D but here is my wishlist:

- support for USB drives
Is the USB port USBv1 or USBv2 ?
- regulate/slow/stop the fan when drives are sleeping
- journaling file system
- Put back the scandisk & defrag
- better disk failure/error checking.
- S.M.A.R.T monitoring for the disks
- Ability to adjust the MTU size (give us the jumbo frames!)
There are reports of at least 30% performance improvement when using jumbo frames!
- Uptime and performance statistics on status page
- FTP logging

Cheers!

Software:
1.  Secure FTP
2.  Add "Recycle Bin" capability to Samba

Hardware:
1. Auto-restart after a power failure
2. Ability to control the fan speed (adjust temperature points for low-med-high)

Auto-restart after a power failure, a must these days of expensive energy and short $$$$.

Wake Up on Lan, same reason.

SFTP and SSH.

Ability to change caonfiguration files from web interface (SMB, UPNP server, etc).

I'd like to put in a request for XBox 360 support.

I bought a Linksys NAS 200 last week, primarily to be able to share media content with my home and work computers and XBox.  (I have a home office, and all work computers are behind 2 additional routers).  I have lots of computers I could use as a media server, but I wanted a device I could use for this purpose without having to have an XP machine running all of the time.  Anyway,  I returned the Linksys because it was soooo sloooooow, and it had some issues with my Xbox (although it could stream some content).  I read on the web that the DNS-323 was much faster (and it is), and that it supported the 360 (although I can't remember what site(s) I saw this on).  The DNS-323 is much faster, but doesn't work at all with the XBox which is a big dissapointment.
