DNS-320 Cannot See Drive
« on: April 28, 2017, 09:03:22 AM »

All of a sudden the NAS says "no drive" when I have one in there.  I don't hear any physical sounds that would lead me to believe that the drive is bad, however, the disk keeps whirring as if it is not seeing the NAS either.  I have tried updating FW to 2.05b10 and no luck.  Disconnected and reconnected, no luck.  Put a new drive in it and the NAS sees it fine.  I am thinking it is some type of logical issue with the drive, but the drive manufacturer keeps pointing me back to D-Link (who btw only answers one question and then goes away - not supportive at all!)  Can anyone out there suggest thing(s) to try?  Thanks!

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your DNS? Look at the sticker behind or under the device.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the DNSs web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

What is the Mfr, model# and size of the HDD?
Both slots installed or using just one drive?

Does the drive work in a PC? Just to see if Windows can see and use it.

Unfortunately no.  I am told it is Linux ext3 if that makes any difference...

You can sometimes find a ext3 drivers for windows then Windows can access the drive: http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=41400.0
How long have you had this drive? New?
Does it already have data on it?

Had it about 3 years and definitely has data on it.  I have a partial backup of it, but as luck would have it, the most important data did not back up.

Try one of the Windows drivers and see if the drive works on a PC.

I recommend getting a 2nd drive installed and using it as the back up drive for the 1st drive.

The easiest way to find out anything about this drive is to mount it in a USB/SATA caddy/adapter, download the seatools disk test software and put it on your PC then plug in the USB adapter with the drive.

When windows sees the drive, run the disk test software to check the drive is actually working and there are no S.M.A.R.T. test failures.  If it passes that then run a surface scan.

If the drive passes all the tests and is still not seen by the NAS let us know because there are other things that may be the problem.
