Issues with DIR-605L router
« on: May 23, 2015, 06:25:08 AM »

I've DIR-605L wireless router, which I'm trying to use with my modem (Speedstream 4100) to connect to internet. While I can connect to internet with my laptop directly connected to the modem, there's no internet connection for devices when they are connected to Wireless router (which is in turn connected to modem). On the config page for Wireless router, it shows that the DHCP is disconnected. I tried multiple options, from resetting modem, router, to changing various options (reducing MTU size to 1442, LAN speed to 10 mbps and so on) to get the DHCP client on wireless router working. But nothing has helped. Does anyone have idea why this could be happening and how it can be handled?

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under the router case.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • Is ISP Modem/Service using Dynamic or Static WAN IP addressing?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
  • Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
  • For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.
  • If the ISP modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT and How NAT Works. Call the ISP and ask to see if the ISP modem can be bridged. To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ. Also check the routers DHCP IP address maybe conflicting with the ISP modems IP address of 192.168.0.1. Check to see if this is the same on the ISP modem, and if modem can't be bridged, change the DIR router to 192.168.1.1 or .0.254.

You may want to get the ISP modem bridged or use the DMZ on the modem for the 605L router if it can't be bridged. Contact your ISP and ask about bridge features for the ISP modem. This will help with the 605L.

I used bridged mode, but then router still fails to get the internet connection.
When using bridged mode, do you suggest using PPPOE setting on the router or DHCP?

Without bridged mode, I can connect to internet with modem directly connected to computer. In bridged mode, if router fails to get connect to Internet, I don't have option of connecting computer to modem to get to internet.

PPPoE however I'd ask your ISP. For DSL, most use PPPoE with user name account and PW on the 605L router. Ensure that always ON is selected.

When bridging any ISP modem, the UI becomes inaccessible. This is by design.

Ok, finally got it working.

My modem has 3 modes of operation: PPP on modem, PPP on computer and Bridged mode.
Earlier, when you mentioned bridging the modem, I used 'Bridge mode' on modem without any success.
But then I tried setting 'PPP on computer' mode on modem and then selected 'PPPOE' on router (instead of DHCP earlier) and gave the ISP provided username/pwd on router itself.

Now the 'internet LED' on modem doesn't glow (it's gone off), but router is able to get the IP and connect to internet. And all my devices are wirelessly connected to router and accessing internet as well. All sites accessible, except google (the usual default test site :-)). Not sure if Google network is down or just some setting messing up google access.

Thanks for all the pointers.

Yes the Internet LED on the ISP modem may show OFF and usually is expected when in bridge mode.

Glad you got it working. Enjoy.  ;)
