Recommended Switches for Ethernet Backhaul (COVR r2203)
« on: November 19, 2020, 07:37:15 AM »

Good morning,

Model Name: COVR-r2203 (1x2200 and 2xC1200)
Hardware Version: A1
Firmware Version: 1.05

My network layout is as follows
Cable Modem -> COVR A (COVR-2200) -> Cisco 2960 8-port managed switch -> both COVR B points (C1200's) are connected to seperate gigabit ethernet ports running to different areas of the home.  One COVR B runs to the basement and has a Playstation connected to it via the second port (I prefer a wired connection for gaming).

Ethernet Backhaul Issues
I've kind of hit the end of my rope with the ethernet backhaul.  The system itself seems to work fine, but my Cisco 2960 switch is throwing fits, and has taken the liberty of shutting ports briefly on my behalf due to what I think it is seeing as a routing loop...so with the Cisco 2960 I end up losing my ethernet backhaul anyways...

I just want this to work...so I'm prepared to replace the Cisco 2960 with a newer unmanaged switch.  However...I've been unable to identify switches that are compatible with the IEEE 1901.5 protocol that is referenced (outside the forumes).

Am I correct that I should be able to directly replace the Cisco 2960 with something like a DGS-108 or DGS-1008G, and have the ethernet backhaul work properly?  I'm basing this on other posts that I have read...but want to make sure that I understand this fully before implementing.

Is there a listing of switches that have been proven to work with the COVR ethernet backhaul?

Aside from wireless performance...is there a way to confirm that the backhaul is actually working properly?  It would definitely be nice to be able to determine proper function through the web interface (or app).  I understand that this is being looked into, is there anything we can check with the 1.05 firmware?

Thanks for any guidance you can provide.

Link>Welcome!

  • What region are you located?

Do you you IGMP or Green Ethernet protcols enabled on this Cisco switch?

ALso you might update to v1.06:

D-Link DGS-105/108 and HP ProCurve 1400/1800 series switches work with my 2202 system.

Currently in the Ann Arbor MI area.

There are no IGMP or "Green Features" enabled on the switch.

Interestingly it seems to be related to spanning tree...the 2960 switch is actively blocking traffic out an ethernet ports to prevent a data loop from occurring.

Gi0/1     COVR - Router      connected    1            full   1000 10/100/1000BaseTX
Gi0/4     COVR - Living Room connected    1            full   1000 10/100/1000BaseTX
Gi0/8     COVR - Basement    connected    1          a-full a-1000 10/100/1000BaseTX

Interface           Role Sts Cost      Prio.Nbr Type
------------------- ---- --- --------- -------- --------------------------------
Gi0/1               Desg FWD 4         128.1    P2p
Gi0/4               Desg FWD 4         128.4    P2p Edge
Gi0/8               Back BLK 4         128.8    P2p

From what I can see...there seem to be two scenarios in play for me.  One seems to work okay, the other does not work well at all.

1. backhauled wireless (living room)... seems to function "okay" with no errors as long as I don't connect a wired device to the COVR B access point.

2. backhauled wireless (basement)...there are some issues here as the  COVR B access point is also connected to a Playstation via ethernet 2 on the COVR B to take advantage of the wired connection.  This backhaul has been blocked by the 2960 and is being forced to use the wireless backhaul (blocked by the switch internally and is thus being forced to use the wireless backhaul).

I may just try and run a second standalone ethernet cable for the Playstation...it's just interesting that with ethernet backhaul I can't connect anything to the ethernet port without causing the 2960 to throw a fit.

I've removed all second connections from the Ethernet backhaul Covr B points...so there is nothing connected via ethernet...only the backhaul and there is no change in the line condition.

I'll install the DGS-108 tomorrow so that it sits like this

Cable Modem -> COVR A (2200)-> DLINK DGS 108 -> port 1

DLINK DGS 108 -> port 2 will connect to the basement COVR B (C1200)
DLINK DGS 108 -> port 3 will connect to the living room COVR B (C1200)
DLINK DGS 108 -> port 8 will connect to the Cisco 2960

This way any routing issues should be squared away by the unmanaged switch, with the remaining items sitting on the managed switch...if I run into problems I'll just move everything to the unmanaged switch and report back.  Do you see anything glaring with this layout?

I know my configuration works for me here:
COVR A point>DGS-1100(Next2COVR AP Point>DGS-108(EquipCloset)>DGS-105(LV Rm)>DGS-105(Basement)<>COVR B Point
DGS-1100>HP Pro Curve 1410 Series 24Pt Switch(EquipCloset)>Home wired network and rooms.

Well...it's confirmed working.

Performance is excellent with wireless (max speed achieved)...and that's what the main driver for me is.

The inner network guy is perplexed...and wants to understand the IEEE spec for this a little better!

----- confirmed working -----

Cable Modem -> COVR A (2200) -> DLINK DGS 108 -> port 1
DLINK DGS 108 -> port 2 connects to the basement COVR B (C1200)
DLINK DGS 108 -> port 3 connects to the living room COVR B (C1200)
DLINK DGS 108 -> port 8 connects to the Cisco 2960 on port 1

Long story short....buy a DGS-108 switch and park the COVR's on it.

Thanks for the guidance FurryNutz

Or a DGS-105  ;) (5 ports may do too).
Seems the netgear equivalent, and tp-link unmanaged work too. As seen in IEEE 1908.1 protocol discussions.

The 105 is just the 5 port version of the 108. TP-Link is not recommended.
