1. "Fixed Security Vulnerability Unauthorized Remote Command Execution in DIR-645 with DIR645A1_FW106B01.bin & 106B01_Beta01 - reported by Chunibalon"
NOTE: if your DIR-645 router is working with out any issues, it's recommended to keep the current version of FW that is loaded unless your are effected by one of the fixes.

Given that this is a security fix, I'm inclined to install it in spite of this advice. HOWEVER:
Are there any difficulties installing the previous version (1.06 B01 -- no betas-- which I have running now) over the newer one if it causes problems? Thanks again! -- jclarkw

Should be a problem if you follow the FW Update Process. ;) I would save router configs before going up or down. However I would not load any configs after upgrading from one to another. If you have a config file for each FW version, then load that config file for that version of FW that you load. Keep config files with there same perspective FW versions. I know upgrading to newer you should be save to load the config file and you can. However if you run into odd issues, you should do a factory reset then set the router up from scratch and see if there is any differences.

Just loaded this FW on top of the original v1.06 from 2015. I couldn't test wifi however wired seems fine. Visited some sites and all seems working well.
Not upgrade issues.

why is this beta only available for NA routers?
I am in Europe and would like to get a security update, too.

I believe this firmware will work for most regions. Let me find out.

There is no mention of specific regions listed for this firmware file so I will assume it will be OK. You can always downgrade if you experience any issues.

Well, I just bricked my dir 645 using this b02 firmware :(
It blinks (WAN LED) and even 192.168.0.101 does not let me flash anything to it :(

After upgrading FW, default settings will be reset so default web page access will be at 192.168.0.1 using default admin and blank PW.
Recommend using IE11 or FF browsers for doing any FW updates. Chrome has been known to cause problems.

Thanks for your help. I could access emergency through 192.168.0.100 (strange!) and flash FW .106b01, but then the router just showed power and WIFI LED and no connection on any IP (tried IP range scanner to find it in LAN). resetting brought me back to step 1 :(

on the third try I was able to revive it:
how can I see which beta I already have flashed? it only shows main FW version 1.06.
BTW: It would be great to include the hint to scan your IP range (LAN) with a free tool to really find the router Emergency Room IP. For me it was 192.168.0.100!

It told me before that there was no newer FW than the 2015 released one, but there were two newer beta firmwares.
so there is no way to tell on which beta I am on, right?

To get the exact version, open a browser and type in the IP of your router /version.txt (http://192.168.0.100/version.txt) or http://dlinkrouter.local./version.txt

I'm surprised the router bricked after the update. You will need to contact your regional D-Link support and ask them if they have these security beta files (have them check SIM or D-TRACK). These security patches are global and if the file posted on the US site doesn't work they need to offer it to European users.

You don't have to use the prior version, any version of FW will work from your region in the recovery mode. Something to get the router loaded again and working. You can update normally if you can get the router back into a working state. Looks like you got it working again though.

As far as new models, the DIR-822 or DIR-842. If you can find a DIR-880L or DIR-890L cheap get it.
The DIR-6xx series is single band and no longer are being made. Everything is dual-band (DIR-8xx).

Back then, it was the DIR-657 that was the follow on to the 655 and 645. The 645 was a good router and still is for simple ISPs and simple users.
As Greenbay mentioned, all new stuff is now dual band now days.

$150 for a 890L is a steal. Solid router.

Well, I just needed a router that could deliver my 500 mbit connection to the other devices in LAN. and for 5 bucks the 645 was a steal. I am trying to get a 850 for under 10 bucks now.

The 850 maybe on the lower fringes for ISP speed support. I believe that QoS on the 850 may not operate correctly or support 500mb speeds.
Let us know if we can help recommend something if the 850 doesn't work for you.

I haven't even activated QoS on my dir 645. according to the specs the dir 850L has a higher clocked CPU and even more RAM. shoudln't it handle speeds even better than my 645 model (which can do 500 mbit/s wan to LAN without a problem)?

Yes however there maybe a limitation on QoS. Some older models were only capable of 100Mb Down and 50Mb up for QoS. There are two Revs I believe, A and B. I think Rev B Would be more capable.

I thorougly check smallnetbuilders for reviews before I buy, but for 5 bucks I couldn't resist the dir 645.

QOS can be deactivated or enabled.

Wow, didn't think it would be capable. Well definitely worth checking out when you get your higher service. Ya, QoS will be capped at 100Mb if I remember. Back then, wasn't much 1Gb ISP services available. ::)
