Phantom IP addresses
« on: September 26, 2008, 02:44:51 PM »

When  I try to connect my Dap-1522 to this router I keep getting phantom IP's assigned to any device connected to it. I get the 169.254.x.x addresses and yes I upgraded to the new firmware 1.02 which is supposed to fix it. any thoughts

Not sure if this would help but these IP addresses (169.254.x.x) are known as auto-IP addresses in Windows.  Auto-IP addressing is a "feature" that Microsoft has added to Windows (XP???) in order of the networking to not completely fail when the Ethernet adapter fails to locate a DHCP service.

Actually the 169.254.XXX.XXX is a APIPA address, and was developed by DARPA as fail over address scheme that would allow military networks to continue to function in a catastrophic multisystem failure.
It is implemented in the TCP/IP suite.

If the PC's that are connecting to the DAP-1522 are the ones getting a 169.254.x.x IP's that probably means that the DAP is not connecting to the DIR-825 so that's why the PC's or Devices connected to it cannot contact the DHCP server in the DIR-825.

So if you have the DAP in Bridge mode check that you have the correct wireless settings from the DIR correct.

The problem is the weak signal this router generates on the 5ghz band. It works fine up to about 20 feet with no walls. After that the connection drops and I am unable to get a ip address for any device connected to my Dap-1522. The 2.4ghz band works fine. I will try some placement options to try and get a good connection.

The 5ghz band is known for having penetration issues.
Thats why 5 ghz is mainly used out doors.

Then why do you advertise and sell it as an indoor router  ???

I'm not saying it won't work. I'm simply informing you of 5ghz band issues.

No hard feelings here Lycan. You are very helpful on this board and represent your company very well. I have an 6 year old Netgear 5ghz wirelessA router that works fine thru-out my house so I expected a little more.

Granted, and therein lies the problem. We code our hardware to be "friendly" and sometimes that causes problems. Like I've said before, do not feel bad about needing to return the hardware. If you feel that the unit does not perform to your expectations, return it. I would never suggest that someone keep some thing that doesn't do what they paid for it to do.

I do appreciate you not basing the product, it's acutally very good at it's price point. We understand that it's not right for everyone.
