Unable to boot DNS-343 "System is booting....."
« on: December 05, 2017, 03:47:07 PM »

Hi,

I bought my DNS-343 about 5 years ago. I used it happily for some time and was very happy with it. I recently moved and I had it sitting in my closet for about 2 months. Now when I turn it on it is stuck at "System is booting...." on the screen and I can't see it on my network no matter what I try. I called support and they were unable to diagnose the issue saying they would RMA it if it was within a year (which is standard waranty apparently) but since I have had it for 5 years they will not do anything for me.

I have tried multiple times to use the reset button on the back as well to no avail. This is my last hope. Does anyone have any magic tricks that I haven't thought of that might bring it back to life or do I have a $300 dollar paperweight on my desk now?

Thank you anyone for any help or ideas at all!

Link>Welcome!

  • What region are you located?

What Mfr and model is the main host router?

Are the drives still in it? I would take the drives out and try a factory reset with out the drives in and see if it will boot up. Use ie11 or FF browser to see if you can access the UI. Use Compatibility Mode on IE11.

I would have someone check the power voltage and amps at the tip as well. Some adapters go bad over time.

I am located in the United States.

The router is one provided by my ISP, AT&T.
Mfr - Pace Plc
Model - 5268AC

The drives are not in it and I have tried a factory reset with them out. I have tried holding down the reset button for 10 seconds while it is on. And I have tried holding it down before I turn it on and neither work.

When I access my router's interface, the router seems to not see the device since I can't see it in the interface. How can I check the power voltage and amps? Never really done that before.

Thank you for your response! I really do appreciate your time in trying to help me solve why this thing won't boot! :)

Ya if the router isn't seeing the DNS then the DNS isn't coming to ready fully. So no networking is happening.

You need to find a local electronics repair shop or if you know some one with a voltage meter that can look at the power adapter. Also you could find a matching adapter to see if that might help.

This is about the only thing that could be a cause. We presume the DNS had been working the last time you had it up and running?

Yep, it was working about 1.5 months ago. I unplugged it, put it in the closet. It was working when I put it away. I took it back out a few days ago and now when I plug it in the screen just gives me "System is booting...." with the dots moving across.

I never thought of trying a different power adapter since it does turn on, just doesn't get past that "System is booting...." part so I can check around and see if I can find another one. If I do find a voltage meter, what would I be looking for in terms of seeing if that is the cause?

low voltage or amps on the power adapter.

Odd that the DNS would do this after last know working condition.
