DGS-3100-24 unresponsive after firmware upgrade
« on: January 31, 2017, 08:40:55 AM »

I have an older DGS-3100-24 switch and upgraded its firmware (3.50.23 to 3.60.28), using the web UI. All seemed to be going well. It said the firmware upload was successful and told me to reboot, so I did that via the web UI. From that point on, I've lost access to the webUI, and the switch doesn't seem to be functional. I get a power LED, but nothing else. I let it sit like that for probably an hour and never was able to access it again.

Eventually, I decided to try power cycling the switch with a serial cable/PuTTY connection to see what's going on. When I do that, I get the following on boot:

------ Performing the Power-On Self Test (POST) ------

UART Channel Loopback Test........................PASS
Testing the System SDRAM..........................PASS
Boot1 Checksum Test...............................PASS
Boot2 Checksum Test...............................PASS
Flash Image Validation Test.......................PASS

BOOT Software Version 1.0.0.03 Built  14-Mar-2007  14:26:36

Network Switch based on 88E6218 with ARM946E-S.
64MByte SDRAM. I-Cache 8 KB. D-Cache 8 KB. Cache Enabled.

Autoboot in 2 seconds - press RETURN or Esc. to abort and enter prom.
Preparing to decompress...

(this goes from 1% to 100% fairly quickly, I cut that part out since it puts each number on a new line)

Decompressing SW from image-1

(same thing of going 1-100% with each % on a new line)

OK
Running from RAM...

....and that's as far as I get. It doesn't respond to any commands, and the switch itself doesn't seem to be functional when I plug devices into it. I have a solid power LED and get link lights when I connect devices to it, but the devices can't talk to each other. I've also tried pressing enter/escape during boot when it says, but it doesn't respond to that (thought maybe it was putty, but the same thing happens when I use Termite). The switch also doesn't respond to ping on its default IP address of 10.90.90.90 when I try plugging in a laptop.

Is there anything else I can try, or is the switch just bricked now?

edit: for what it's worth, I was basically just using this as a standalone, dumb switch, so I wasn't doing any stacking, using any of the management features, etc.

What region are you located?

What browser are you using to mange the switch? Try IE11 or FF?

Did you clear all browser caches before and after upgrading the FW before reconnecting?
Is the switch connected to a router?

US (Georgia in southeastern US, to be specific)

I've tried with both Firefox (50.1.0) and IE11. Also tried compatibility mode in IE11.

The switch is not connected to a router right now but was at the time I attempted the firmware upgrade (I pulled it off the rack after I had the problem). I just have it sitting on my workbench with a laptop plugged into it right now.

When it was connected to a router, did you access it via the IP address it got from the router or the default IP address?
Might reconnect to router and see if it gets an IP address from router and connect there...

Was connecting default of 10.90.90.90, and it was working on that before the firmware upgrade. When I connect it to a router, it doesn't seem to be pulling an IP address via DHCP (I can actually log in to my router and see a list of all its DHCP clients).

Ok, if it's not pulling an IP then I presume the switch is in a bad state. How bad I don't know. Seems like you could take this up with support and see if they can help. I see that support ended on this 1/1/2017 though.  :-\

I would start with email support. I presume phone would be best however not sure how far you'll get being discontinued. Worth a try.

I don't know if there is any recovery modes on switched like routers.

Yeah, I suspect that the switch is probably bricked. I haven't dealt as much specifically with D-Link switches, but I know it generally doesn't end well if a firmware upgrade goes wrong for just about any kind of device. I guess that's what I get for trying to fix something that wasn't broken.   >:(

I tried putting in an email support request. If I get something helpful from that, I'll post the results here. I might get lucky and find out there's some kind of recovery mode (I've dealt with some Cisco routers before that have recovery modes for stuff like this, but then this is neither a Cisco device nor a router, so it's a completely different situation).

Otherwise, I'll probably just trash the switch. Thankfully, it won't be a big loss since I bought it used really cheap from a business that was closing down and selling off all their stuff. Thanks for the input.

Update:

Got a reply. Turns out I had a dumb moment and installed firmware for the wrong hardware version of the switch. My switch is hardware version A1, and the firmware I installed was for hardware version Bx. Same switch, but different hardware version. First things support asked me to do were confirm where I downloaded the firmware and double-check my hardware version. They sent me a link to the support page for the correct hardware version of my switch, and it dawned on me when I checked there.

I'm guessing the web UI probably allowed me do it since it was technically the same model switch, but then when it tried to boot with the new image, that was it.

Might still find out there's some way to recover from that, but I'm not holding my breath. Most likely, I've bricked it. I'll post another update if I hear anything else.

Final update: confirmed that the switch is now a paperweight, and there's no recovery mode. Gonna write that one off as a loss and move on. Kinda sucks that the switch's web UI allowed me to even get that far with the wrong firmware, but I take full blame for it, since it was still my fault in the end for not paying attention. Oh well. It was still cool of D-Link support to reply to me at all. They could've just told me to take a flying leap since the switch was out of warranty anyway.

I popped the switch's case open out of curiosity (long past the point of caring about any damage I could potentially do to it from that at this point). It has a couple of small fans I pulled out and saved, but that's about the only potentially useful thing I could get. Funny enough, I got the switch so cheap that the two fans I pulled out probably made it worth the money I spent. So thankfully, it wasn't a big loss.

Sorry you couldn't get it working. Switches are fairly cheap now days.

Come back and visit if needed for other items in need.

Good Luck.
