The MAC Address entered is invalid for ipad
« on: June 03, 2010, 04:07:40 AM »

I am unable to reserve an IP for my iPad, i.e. add  my ipad to the "DHCP RESERVATIONS LIST".  I get a pop-up saying "The MAC Address entered is invalid."  The address starts with "D8".  My understanding is most start w/ "00".  The router says my firmware is up-to-date (3.01).  Is there a solution for this?

Others have had similar problems http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11598985 with different routers.

Thanks,
Jim

Jim,
You didn't state what DIR-615 H/W revision you have, but for the Cx rev, they list the following for the 3.11NA firmware release notes:
¤ Change MAC address fields to allow beginning values other than 00 (eg: 08:00:46:EE:D1:C8).

Perhaps you need to update your firmware? If the router's webpage says FW is up to date, you may need to manually download it from d-link & install over a wired port.

FWIW, MAC filtering is next to useless as far as security goes. Any 2-bit hacker worth his salt can circumvent it (i.e., spoof/clone the MAC addr). Your best bet is to use a WPA2/AES encryption setting w/ good pass phrase & call it good. Once you have a strong encryption config, MAC filtering is moot.

Thanks for the info.  I actually have C1.  The router said the firmware was up-to-date, but it looks like as you said there's an update.  However, it seems like there's been some issues(?) with it http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=7845.0

I have wpa2 and a good passphrase, so I'll just not use the mac address filtering for now.

Thanks,
Jim

Good choice.

I don't think there's ever been a FW upgrade where someone doesn't complain about breakage, etc. More often that not, they are using advanced routing features on a relatively 'un-advanced' consumer grade router. Given that you were asking about MAC filtering, doubt you are using advanced features ;).

Now go watch some Hulu on that iPad!

I have a new Nexus S whose MAC starts with "b4" and even though it appears in the network devices list I can't add a static IP address for it because the dlink says the MAC is invalid :-(

I have a C2 with 3.0.1 installed (which the C2 says is the latest and I can't install 3.03B07 because it says it's not valid for this device.

I would call up DLink and ask them if they have any information on this. There could be an issue with the router and or the device or both not being able to accept the MAC address. It should however something could be a miss. Let us know.

Solved: Upgrading to firmware version 313NA fixed this problem.

I had to pretend to be American as the Australian D-Link website didn't have a recent firmware version. Also had to use firefox and not chrome or safari to upload the firmware :-(

Glad you got it resolved. Odd that Safari wouldn't perform the upgrade? OSX or Win?

Hmm...odd, I use Safari all the time on my router. However I don't have a 615 though. What version of OSX are you using? I use 10.6 at the moment. I have been using Opera broswer lately. I like it pretty much. I love the tabbing features of it. Well, glad you go it updated. Hope it works well for you.

I'm on the latest and greatest OS X and Safari.

I'm a Chrome user though :-)
