Title: Remote cams fall offline in Dlink cloud apps but are accessible via http access
Post by: remoteCamsFarAway on November 22, 2016, 08:36:38 PM
I've got 5 remote cameras which seem to come online to Dlink cloud apps following a power cycle and then individually and randomly fall offline several days or weeks later as determined by the Dlink cloud apps (the cloud turns to a red X).  However, I can still access the cams directly through their http server.  They are not really offline.

Just guessing but it seems like this phenomenon started happening randomly about 3 months ago.

3 2330L cams with 1.14 FW
2 2630L cams with 1.04 FW

What would make the Dlink cloud apps spontaneously think a camera is offline when it is still online?  The camera hadn't been accessed between when it was online and when it fell "offline".

Same here.  Very annoying.  I have 4 DCS-932L cameras and they drop off one by one until I cycle power.  They may stay up for a week before dropping off again.
Definitely worse with the latest firmware update.

What Mfr and model is the main host router?
What wireless modes are you using?
What is the distance between the Camera and the main host router?
How many other wireless devices do you have connected to the main host router?

I recommend setting a static IP address ON the cameras outside of the main host routers default DHCP IP address pool as a troubleshooting step:   DHCP (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=58017.0)

Test cameras with uPnP and uPnP Port Forwarding both enabled on ALL cameras: DCS Cloud (L) Series Camera Configuration and Mydlink.com (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=62395.0)

  • What Hardware version is your DCS? Look at the sticker behind or under the camera.
  • Link>What Firmware (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=47512.0) version is currently loaded? Found on the DCSs web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

How many other wireless devices do you have connected to the main host router?
  • Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by that maybe causing interferences?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area that maybe causing interferences? Link> Use a WiFi Scanner (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=48327.0) to find out. How many?

Firmware Version 1.14.04 (2016-09-09)
Hardware Version A

USA
Netgear Nighthawk R7000 router (irrelevant question)
B/G/N modes (irrelevant question)
Distance is about 15 ft
Maybe 5-7 other devices on WIFI (zero issues with ANY devices)
No other devices near cameras
No.

This used to not be an issue.  The only thing that has changed is the firmware in the cameras, and it seems to get worse with every update.
I rebooted them yesterday, and already two of them have fallen off.

I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.
Let us know how it goes please.

Same here. It started a couple of months ago as isolated incidents but it has gotten progressively worse (almost every couple of days now). Seems to affect certain cameras over and over again, and getting a little tired of seeing that red X. Affecting our: DCS-932L's, and DCS-930L's. Our DCS-5222L seems to be rock solid.

If this is a Wi-Fi connection issue (if it is, the blame is on the camera since the network configuration and environment overall has not changed), the cameras do indeed connect back up to Wi-Fi, but myDlink fails to return to service until a reboot of the camera. Perhaps Dlink should consider improving mydlink communication restoral after a connection interruption?

I have reached out to Dlink but just got numerous replies about how to improve my Wi-Fi connection. I've done all I can in troubleshooting my wireless setup, and I have dozens of devices/smart home products that all communicate without issue, so I'm not going to waste any more time doing that, especially when this points out an overall problem with mydlink communication restoration after a failure.

I'd love to stick with dlink, but I think the only thing that will keep me with them now is if they offer a HomeKit camera sometime soon. That would allow my Apple TV or iPad to act as a more reliable remote access tool rather than the flaky myDlink service.

I've reached out to myDlink support once again. Hopefully we'll get somewhere, because these cameras have been rock solid up until recently.

The issue has unfortunately returned :(. I'm going to see if I can get an ethernet wire out of a switch near one of them to alleviate the issue, but I wish they'd restore their connection to mydlink when something goes awry.

Noticed on the mydlink site that there was emergency maintenance this morning. Perhaps that explains the disconnection today. mydlink emailed back and gave traditional Wi-Fi troubleshooting steps, so hopefully the disconnection today was just the mydlink maintenance.

I'm going to contact them today by phone.
This "scripted" online support is a joke.
I set it to a static IP and enabled the uPnP, which is also enabled on the router.  Yesterday, 2 of my 4 cameras dropped off again.  All 4 are configured identically (except IP address) and are running the same firmware.

I highly doubt it was maintenance related as I would have expected all 4 to drop.

One odd thing I will note here.  While I can still ping all 4 of them, the two that have dropped off have a strange ping reply pattern.  The first ping, on those two, always takes longer to get back.  For example, the first reply could be ~700ms and then the next pings are 1ms.

As my comment above states, all cameras are configured identically.

This INCLUDES uPnP.  I am not kidding when I say the only difference is the IP address.  These cameras were all purchased at the same time, are the same hardware version, same firmware, etc.

There is two different uPnP features, uPnP and (uPnP Port Forwarding). Is uPnP Port Forwarding enabled on these cameras?  ???

I have this same dropping issue with 4 DCS-5222 Rev B cameras in three locations.  Some are Ethernet-wired, some are Wi-Fi; some have static IP addresses; some do not.  The cameras are not offline from the point of view of the LANs they are on--they all ping just fine.  I can then go into the setup pages for the cameras and do a remote reboot--then are again accessible through the D-Link apps.  Although this issue appears annoyingly often--sometimes daily--it did not appear before the latest firmware updates.  I have no clue if this is a cause-and-effect relationship with the latest firmware or not.  I may try an earlier firmware version and see if that addresses the issue.  Since this is happening across so many D-Link cameras based upon the postings above, in so many different configuration environments, could this be a D-Link/D-Link app issue that needs to be addressed?  I would greatly appreciate guidance from D-Link.

Well, an exercise in futility for sure.  I tried several older versions of the firmware and none of them would allow the cameras to show up in MyDlink at all.  I had to settle for one version back, 1.13.  The issue still existed at this firmware, but wasn't as bad as 1.14, so I'm sitting on it now.  24 hours on the new (old) firmware and all cameras are online.  It's only a matter of time until they start dropping off.

For anyone interested, I stumbled on a third party firmware (OpenWRT) that will work on D-Link cameras.  When I have some more time, I plan on migrating to this solution and getting completely away from D-Link's lousy cloud-based system that has a horrible reliability rate.  I will report back after the migration and let you know how things are working.  For now, I will deal with the occasional reboots that D-Link calls the "solution" to their problems.

Let us know how v1.13 works for you and when and if you see the disappearance from the MDL service while using v1.13.

My 933L has been online for a long time and only goes down if there is a service issue or if I'm doing something on the home network. Comes online automatically.
Heres my settings:
(http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/furrynutz740il/933Networking_zpsqtgny7rg.png) (http://s1195.photobucket.com/user/furrynutz740il/media/933Networking_zpsqtgny7rg.png.html)

FYI, using 3rd party FW with the cameras is a alternative solution however will not work with D-Links MDL services.

My settings were similar.  Every time my cameras drop off, they NEVER come back automatically.  Each one had to be rebooted from the web interface or power-cycled.  This has always been the case with these.

Sounds like there is a bug in FW. There was a reported problem with my 933L that the camera would not re-associate with any router wifi SSID name after a period of being disconnected.

Are your cameras connected to the main host routers SSID when you notice they are disconnected from the MDL service or not connected?
Title: Re: Remote cams fall offline in Dlink cloud apps but are accessible via http access
Post by: phuz on December 09, 2016, 10:51:22 AM
Definitely not the issue here.  Each camera is still connected to the SSID because I can ping each one and login to each one's web interface via its IP.
Title: Re: Remote cams fall offline in Dlink cloud apps but are accessible via http access
Post by: FurryNutz on December 09, 2016, 10:55:54 AM
Would you take not on the next event when any of the cameras are disconnected from the MDL service to see if they are still associated with the main host routers SSID name. Try to connect to one of them at there web page on the LAN side.

I presume if they are then something is causing them to disconnect from the service and not re-establishing contact.
One test to try if you can. Turn off ALL but 1 camera. Leave this camera running and see if it disconnects in the same time frame. Need to see if this could be a single camera issue or multiple.

Post by: phuz on December 09, 2016, 11:04:03 AM
Am I missing something here?  Yes, every time it disconnects from MDL service, it is still connected to the main router SSID.  Rather than walking around and unplugging each one, I typically go to the camera IP --> Maintenance --> Reboot.  After this, it reappears in MDL.

Can you try using just one camera and let us know if it disconnects or not.

On the 1.14 firmware, it was a matter of days.  On the 1.13 firmware, it was more like a couple of weeks, so my guess is I won't see the first one drop off for at least a week.

Consider I use these cameras to monitor my children, I am not going to disconnect all of them except one.  That's not a viable option.

When and if it does, post here about it. Then send me a PM with the listings of model info, FW versions and the MDL service ID number of each camera that's associated with the service. And the email address associated. No PW of course. I'll need this so pass on to them so they can take a look on there end.

I sent them an email last week regarding my DNR-202 which was falling off the service and since then its' been up and online since. I presume it was something with the service.

For the record, one of my cameras fell offline after two days of being online and came back online sometime in the night. All cameras have been online now for at least 5 days now on the latest firmware.

When the cameras fall offline on myDlink, they never disconnect from the router, they're always available via the direct access internally. I'll report back if anything changes, but the online state of my cameras has reached a record as of late.

Haha, come on now.  Can't we just admit the programming and engineering behind this is terrible?  If it was a "random" disconnect, wouldn't the camera have come  back by itself?  I purposely didn't reset this one and it's now been days and it is still OFFLINE, although I can ping it and view the local page for it.
Truly disappointing, D-Link.  I hope they start paying attention because I have made it my mission to steer people away from these cameras now.

Ya I agree, saw same thing with DNR-202L not coming back online after being OFF line with the MDL services. This is a MDL service issue for sure.

Nope, I wanted to see if it would magically re-find itself, but it did not, as I suspected.  At least on the 1.13 firmware, you only have to reboot them every 1-2 weeks, as opposed to 1-2 days with the 1.14 firmware.

Same with my DNR. My DCS-933L has been rock solid though.

Let me know if it happens again. I'll get your information from you then.

Two cameras fell off MDL service within last 2 days.
So frustrating.

I recommend that you submit a support ticket and include the mydlink device numbers in the ticket and also include this forum thread as well for review. My DNR-202L has also gone offline from the service. I'm not home so I can't reboot it.  ::)
