Dir-655 B1 Clogging up
« on: April 25, 2013, 09:48:14 AM »

Hello,

I've recently bought a DIR-655 B1 router, running Firmware Version :  2.05 and ran into issues day one. The router seems to clog up under heavy bandwidth load.   After a reboot of the router, it will perform fine for a minute or so, reaching the max speeds on downloads and uploads the ISP provides. However, as the minute passes by the download speeds drop to only a few percent of ISP's capability. What is more, pings to router or any other external server will show many packets lost, huge increases in ping values as well. I'm basically unable to even access ANY web pages while router is under load, including the routers control panel itself. Upon removing the load, the router performs fine as long as the data exchange does not use up loads of bandwidth, pings are fine, no package loss, no issues whatsoever. Re-introducing the load will clog the router instantly, download speeds not going above 200kb/s out of the 10mb I get after a fresh reboot. I've tried tinkering with routers settings A LOT, dug through tons of internet forums(including this one), done all the standard stuff you post here, all to no avail.

I'm running 2 PCs wired to the router, another one sitting on a wireless connection. Wireless is unrelated, as disabling it does not solve anything. Any of the wired or wireless machines can and will clog up the connection in such a way, that no one seems to able to use the internet at all. PCs are not the issue, running a different router will solve the problems(tested).

Any indications as to what might be the issue and how to solve it?

Link>Welcome!

What region are you located?
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
Has a Factory Reset been performed?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?

If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems:Double NAT
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.
Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. Enable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming for routers that have a Media Server option. Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 or Media Server is not being used.
Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP server feature. Tools/Time.

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations
Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something thats already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

What region are you located?
Europe, Lithuania, to be specific. To be honest - I would not be surprised if this is the NA version of the router knowing our traditions.

Factory reset has been performed a few times.

The ISP is cable, the DIR-655 is directly connected to the internet cable. MTU is @ 1500, it has been on any and all routers that I have used in the past with the same ISP.

QoS, traffic shaping are off.
Unicasting is on.
Using Dynamic IP allocation.
Dns relay is on.
IP addresses are reserved for each and every machine.
IPV6 is off.
FIrewall is endpoint independent for both TCP and UDP.
uPnP is on.
Tried both multicast on and off, no change.
Wish and wps are off.
Tried setting speeds manually and automatically - no change.

Wireless - quite sure is irrelevant, sitting with it disabled and only one machine wired to the router - issue persists.

Firewalls are off, switched around some extra cables I had - no help either. Other routers work fine with the same cabling.

Is this unit a NA or an EU model? It should be listed on the sticker...

FYI, your region doesn't support a DIR-655.
Where did you get this unit from? Online?

There is a Rev B1 model for the UK region and supporting FW. I suppose we could attempt to upgrade to that FW.

Is there a ISP modem? or just a Wall connection with a LAN cable?

What is your ISP Speed UP and DOWN that you are supposed to get that you pay for?
What is speedtest.net reporting or any other speed testing site?

I obtained it from one of Lithuania's IT retailers. Product number would suggest it is a European model.

There is no modem, the Dlink router is connected directly from a wall connection with a LAN cable.

There are no other devices connected, just this one PC. It is connected via wire to the router(the wire is fine, tested with other routers). The supposed connection speed is 100Mbit/s, 75Mbit for upload. I do get 95/74 with no load on the line. However, putting just 400kB/s of download load on the line, flicker wildly from test to test,  failing to get above 45/27 and dropping as low as 12/2. I also include ping reports to the router, those are the ones I'm particularly worried about, as under 400kb/s load I'm actually unable to even open the control panel of the router.

Also, connecting a second computer and splitting the 400kb load in between them(200/200 each) it seems that the problem gets exponentially worse, as I'm not even able to load a speed test page anymore or any page for that matter.

You could try to update using this:
http://www.dlink.com/uk/en/support/product/dir-655-wireless-n-gigabit-router?revision=deu_revb

I recommend that you follow this for updating and don't reload any saved configurations from file after the last factory reset, just set up from scratch using default settings first and test.
FW Update Process

If this still fails, I recommend that you phone contact the EU region D-Link support office and ask for help.

Tried updating to the latest firmware, tried Russian firmware as well. None of them seem to solve the issue, although the latest one seems to delay the clogging effect. Will be contacting the EU support team soon, in the mean time will try all the firmware there is, once I have the time. Thanks for your help!
