Title: Problem setting up parental control on 826L
Post by: BigBill on January 25, 2018, 01:13:27 PM
I have a 826L  and I see FurryNutz you do too.... I am trying to set up parental control so my kids can not access the web from their xbox from 9PM on week days untill 3pm the next day. I first set it up to enable access from 3pm to 9pm but found they could still access it so I tried block from 9pm to 3pm and again they still had access after 9pm I then set 2 polices to block from midnight to 3pm and the other to block from 9pm to 11:59 PM but they still had access after 9pm. Can you help me?? I set up schedules and policies that referenced the appropriate schedule. I also tried using IP address and when that didn't work I tried mac but as I noted I have had no success. I hope someone can help me.

As far as the FAQ reference it did help to confuse me.......I have no idea of ports or how to setup, use or how to do anything with them.
You asked how I was connected and I am not sure,  it is a wireless connection frommy pc to the router and then by usb cable to my antenna that was installed by  service  provider to a tower somewhere
Also I did have access control set up to block my sons phone from using the wireless router and it did work on that but when I tried to do same on the xbox connection using a specified schedule I ran into the problems I mentioned before. (my son said his phone stopped at school at the same time as I blocked it on my router .... could that be related to my setting this parental control ?

When I set the parental control to enable xbox for a spcified schedule it worked  the first time but not the next day. I found that the router assigned a ne IP for the xbox giving it full access again that is why I changed to MAC instead of IP

You need to set an IP address reservation on the router for the xbox. This will include the MAC address. Then point parental controls to this IP address and include it in the control is all.

How is the xbox connected to the router? Wireless or LAN cable. Xbox has both so you may need to set up an IP address reservation for both wireless and LAN cable in case they decide to switch connection methods. Include both in the reservation and controls.

Can I somehow send an attachment  with a screen capture that shows my current acess config?

xbox is setup wireless to router I don't think it is wireless connected to pc ...how could I check.

You say I  need to set an IP address reservation on the router for the xbox. This will include the MAC address.... how do I do that? I figured it was there because I just used the pull down to choose xbos and it put in IP that time but then changed it to another next time ......sorry I am new to this and I appreciate the help

Yes, your in the right direction. Go into the Networking settings on the router and find the name of xbox in the list or drop down list. Select it and it will auto fill the IP address and Mac address fields. You can give it a new name here as well or just use xbox. Select the ADD button just under this section. Then select Save.

I'm referring to the xbox being connected to the router. Not connected to the PC.  ;)

That is how I did it as I said in post 5 and got the results I discribed. That is why I endednup using Mac instead because the router did not give xbox a new mac like it did with the IP addresss.
Do you think that perhaps I have it set up ok but somehow the xbox is using wireless to my PC as it was set that way before we changed to using the router for wireless base, If so do you know how I could check. In both set ups the wireless was through the d-link 826L but the 1st used the pc and the second control was set to use the router. I hope that makes sense.

So the xbox is connected wirelessly to the PC?

I am not sure that is why I asked if you know how I can check.
I know at one time the xbox was wired to the router but since that we set up the router so I no longer had to have my pc on and removed the cable from the xbox to the router.

Well if the xbox is wireless, you can see if it's connected to the router by going to the routers web page and navigate to Status, then select Wireless from the left side menu. This will show you wireless connected devices. Look for the IP or MAC address of the xbox here.

OK... this might indicate something,
Under device info..... status it shows wireless lan is my dlink
                                                    wireless lan2 is my dlink
lan computers is 192.168.0.102 (my  printer ) and 192.168.0.101 (my pc I am using right now)
Under wireless.........status it shows 192.168.0.102 (my  printer ) and 0.0.0.0 (xbox) and 192.168.0.101 (my  my pc )

What does that tell you?

0.0.0.0 is either not getting an assigned IP address or had an address and now the xbox is off or in sleep mode.

When you turn ON the xbox, you can check to see what IP address it's getting under Settings/Networking/Advanced.

Yes, the MACs will be shown at both locations and in the DHCP Reservation list as well.

I turned the xbox on and it now has an IP address. I now nothing about his xbox but it flashed on the screen saying someone was on line so to me that would indicate the xbox is getting through the blocks I think I have set. I looked under access control and for that Mac address I have a after school set to block all access monday~friday 21:00~23:59 and another one called weekam set to block all access monday~friday 12:00~15:00 (the tme here is 13:46) yet the xbox seems to be online (because it is telling me that others are online)

You can test the control by turning off the xbox. Change the time frame to something current or now. Save changes on the router. Then turn ON the xbox. It shouldn't be able to connect. Change your control back after testing.  ;)

Now I have a major problem ......... as I was following one of the procedures  from one of the areas you provided me with I pressed save as instructed and it began to save but then it just hung there. Now I can not access the internet (I am doing this post by bypassing the router) Strangely the lights on the router say all is ok and my son can go on his xbox  when I have the router connected but my computers and phones can't connect. I cant even use the web browser link http://dlinkrouter or http://192.168.0.1 they just return not a valid IPaddress... any ideas or suggestions

Be sure your only including the xbox in any of the controls or rules your setting up. Leave all other devices out of the controls.

Can you get any other PC to access the routers Web page?

If not, then you'll have to probably factory reset the router to clear the mis-configuration out.

When I have the router hooked up the xbox can go online  but every other computer and cellphone that did work doesn't connect anymore. And I tried on a couple of computers to type the 192.168.0.1 and the dlinkrouter to get access but they just time out

Sounds like the control is set up in reverse, so it blocking all others accept for the xbox.  ::)

If you can't get back in, then factory reset. Then set up the router again. Be sure your not blocking all other devices, just the xbox.

OK I managed to get the router up and connected to it with my computer.
Now how can I set up so each users device(phone, computer and or xbox) would require a login that would give them internet access but not be able to change router settings etc. ( as long as I can still have parental control)
Also can you give me simple instruction as to how I would set up so the xbox would have no access from Midnight to say 3PM and no access from 9pm to 11:59PM leaving access for xbox to be  from 3:01PM to 8:59PM MON. thru Fri.
You asked what region I was in ...... Eastern time ( US & CANADA ) I think but the time shown here on the posts are 3HRs short of my actual time
Also I might have found the answer for the first part of this post. I set a password for administrator (that only I know) and I use the wi-fi security settings for the users.

Thanks in advance, Your help is greatly appreciated.
