DIR-685 Disconnects!
« on: February 08, 2012, 02:20:13 PM »

I am getting disconnects on a regular occurrence. I am on a university network and I notice the disconnects when either downloading a file or playing on my PS3. I must make it clear that these disconnects do not occur when I connect directly into the wall, excluding the router!
Resnet (the network provider) leases a DHCP for what I believe is one hour. This is when I lose connection through my router.

Here is the log when the DHCP lease runs out:

"Feb  8 14:32:38  ","Time synchronized"
"Feb  8 14:32:36  ","Access Control disabled."
"Feb  8 14:32:36  ","Remote management is disabled."

"Feb  8 14:32:31  ","DHCP: Client send REQUEST, Request IP 137.205.66.201 from 192.146.136.20."
"Feb  8 14:32:31  ","DHCP: Client receive OFFER from 192.146.136.20."
"Feb  8 14:32:31  ","DHCP: Client send DISCOVER."
"Feb  8 13:32:35  ","Time synchronized"

"Feb  8 13:32:33  ","URL blocking disabled."
"Feb  8 13:32:33  ","MAC filter disabled."

"Feb  8 13:32:29  ","DHCP: Client send REQUEST, Request IP 137.205.66.201 from 192.146.136.20."
"Feb  8 13:32:29  ","DHCP: Client receive OFFER from 192.146.136.20."
"Feb  8 13:32:29  ","DHCP: Client send DISCOVER."

I believe the lease time is in seconds. Is there a way of preventing this from happening? The main reason I can see this disconnection is occurring is because the router basically resets itself every time the lease expires.

Have you asked your ISP about if there seeing any disconnect on there end?
It's possible the reason for the disconnects on the router is that the router doesn't get any signal from where ever the data is coming from.

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

There is no point asking my ISP if they are having a disconnect on their end because when I plug my PS3 directly into the wall, when the DHCP lease expires it renews without disconnecting me. Where as when I plug it into the router, when the lease expires it disconnects me.

Hardware version: A1
Firmware Version: 2.01

I already have all the settings set which you have listed.
Problem still persists.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router?
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer.

Cable.
I do not have a modem since I am on a university network. Well, I do not have access to the modem.

All devices have a reserved IP Address.

I am going to test with a different cable. I cannot see it making a difference though.

Might ask your ISP service if you can get a static IP address on the WAN side...

Wires are not the problem, tried three different ones. I asked my ISP for a log of my IP address and here it is:

It looks as if my router is making a lot of unnecessary requests.

Is the signal going to the ISP modem good? If the signal is bad this then could also lead to the modem not providing a good connection. Does this cable line have any TV line splitters on it?

Is 137.205.66.201 from 28:37:37:00:65:92 the WAN IP address and the mac address of the modem or router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

Do you have spare router you can put online? Would be a good test to see if a different router and or modem do the same thing.

It won't be anything to do with anything apart from the router itself since everything works fine when the router is excluded! Unless there is a way to stop the router completely restarting everything when the lease expires or to stop if requesting so many lease requests, then I cannot see a solution to this.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

You should test a different router and see if same results appear. Possible the 685 is faulty.  :-\

One think you can do to test the router to see if it behaves this way, take the router to a friend or families place that has Internet. Hook it up to there modem and see if you notice if the same thing is happening. It's possible that this router could be just incompatible with your Universities network system. I would test this out and see. If the problem tracks, then possible the router is bad. If not, then you'll know.

Good luck.

I have exactly the same problem, tried connecting into my Cable modem directly; no problem no disconnects. Same DHCP renew in the logfiles. I'm on firmware "2.01beta01 ,  Thu 10 Nov 2011" and it is driving me and all that are using my WLAN crazy!!

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

Some things to try:
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options.

What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.

Turn off Short GI, WLAN Partition and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.
