DAP 1160 and PPPOE
« on: January 09, 2014, 12:44:09 PM »

Hello

I'm having real difficulty to get my DAP 1160 access point working again. I don't know how to set the access point to get internet access by signing in with username and password through pppoe. If I plug the network cable directly to my laptop I can access internet normally by creating new connection. But how to set the access point? If I choose the WISP mode in which I can assign user name and password for pppoe the configuration does not work. Am I missing something? Which settings could pose a problem?

My operating system is Windows 7 and I have, as mentioned, wireless access point DAP 1160.

Any suggestions are highly welcome.

Thanks

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your DAP? Look at sticker under the DAP.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the DAPs web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?

Have you reviewed the User Manual on setup?

Hardware version: A1
Firmware: 1.41
Region: Europe (Slovenia)

20/2Mb DSL connection, I cannot access the router at the moment.

I need to know if it is possible to "tell" the access point to "use" username and password when I connect it through LAN with the main router in the house. The connection between DAP access point and the main router is with ethernet cable.

Yes I have reread the User Manual for several times and tried different configurations (the ones that allow pppoe).

I have already tried this option and if I choose the WISP Client Router option under Wireless Mode I can't see my connection on the Wireless Network Connection list. If I choose Access Point mode I can see my connection on the list after the restart of computer but I can't connect because this mode doesn't have an option to set PPPOE settings. It says in the manual only the WISP Client Router and WISP Repeater allow WAN settings to be set.

Any other suggestions?

I recommend that you phone contact the EU region D-Link support office and ask them for help in the configuration and make sure the settings are correct.

Does the ISP modem/Service hand out a private IP address or DHCP IP address? That DAP will connect and use this address as well..

Let us know how it works out.

Are you getting a 192.168 address or a public IP address? ##.##.###.###

If I choose WISP Client Router and check LAN Setup, there Static IP under "My LAN connection" and the settings are locked (can't be changed and the IP is the one of the DAP 192.168.0.50). Is this why the connection isn't visible under the wireless connection list?

Why is that if I only change the Wireless mode my wireless connection becomes invisible for me...

Ok, Ya, lets contact D-Link support and see if they can configure that correctly. I don't have experience with ISPs and there modems being locked.

The only think I know is that sometimes the DAP can get a 2ndary IP address along with the .50 address. Would be in the .100-200 range maybe and you'd have to have access the modem/router to find out what it might be.

Phone contact D-Link support and let us know how it goes.

mostiscar, as you have DSL and router, the normal way of using PPPoE is for modem to logon (or if you have modem / router in one unit) that does the PPPoE stuff to keep you online, logged in and so on.

The DAP 1160 function is mostly as a access point. If you are going to use it the way I think you want to, then you probably need to use the DSL modem as a bridge and then plug the DAP 1160 directly to the modem.
The router is probably preventing the PPPoE from working they way you are setup at the moment.

If the hardware you have for DSL was provided to you from your ISP I am sure the PPPoE things should be in those units and you can get it working that way instead of having to configure the DAP 1160 for that function.

If you can, call your DSL provider and talk to them. They should be able to get you on the right path to solving your current problem.
