I was having a hell of a time with this router freezing up every 12-24 hours under heavy usage after upgrading to 1.20, like many of the posters here.
I played around for a while to see what I could figure out, and eventually fell back to my DGL-4300, which has to this day, never failed me!
About 2 weeks ago, I tried turning off:
"Enable DNS Relay"
under "Setup"->"Network Settings"
Reboot, and I.. amazingly haven't had a freeze since!
I'm thankfully not seeing the wireless restarts people are, so I can happily say, this thing is back to being my full time router!
I just wanted to share to see if this might work for other people here.
I reset the router a number of times, reset firmware before doing all this... so I had fairly clean settings too.
Here's to hoping it fixes some of your problems!

Yes... so far so good... I have seen the same thing... much more stable
-
bump, come on ppl, a lot of people have the freeze and wireless disconnect bug, is it solved by disabling the dns relay option ?
if so, than I can buy me the 855 as well :P

Hey there;
I am on 1.20 and cannot disable the DNS Relay feature when set to Dynamic IP. Is this right? Are others seeing this too?

I don't run that version FW (my 855 is on 1.21NA.) I've never used DNS Relay; the feature is disabled and my internet connection type is dynamic.
MY DIR-855 has never locked up.
-
I run 1.21 I have never used DNS relay, it is currently greyed out in the options with no way to enable or disable it.
My 855 locks up every 2 days. Locks up may be the wrong term, I should say it grinds to a hault . I just reset mine 20 minutes ago.
If you are thinking of getting an 855 I'll sell you mine for half the retail price if your interested. But I will tell you upfront it is a POS. If you need a duelband router that works then go with the linksys. Dlink is not supporting this unit and I am no longer supporting them.
-
To disable DNS relay, you have to disable the Advanced DNS feature, then things are good to go (checkbox wise at least)
-
how about disabling ipv6 than ?

I disabled "Enable DNS Relay" and the router has been rock solid for four days now. Typically, I only make it 24-48 hours so this looks promising.

So far so good for me too. I will put this fix on my blog and see if others have the same result.
P.S. Does anyone know how I can get my Kama to reach -100?

I am on EU 1.13 and never had any stability problems. In the beginning I had relay enabled but I noticed that Windows 2000 didn't work properly and a lot of problems to resolve adresses. To load one web page too an eternity, so I disabled and configured the DNS on the hosts directly. My windows XP works perfectly with DNS relay enabled. I think I have DNs relay disabled but I need to check when I get back home.

Try letting your ISP manage DNS server IP assignments and only disabling the DNS Relay feature. This works great no stability or resolution issues whatsover.

I did the same and NO lockup!!!!!

I was the post for the hopeful IPv6 solution http://dir855.wordpress.com/wireless-restarts/
which ultimately failed me.
I had the router freeze once but my problem is the constant restarting of the 2.4Ghz wireless (40+ in a 5 minute period).
I will try the relay solution.
For DLink, I am running 1.21NA firmware and had rebooting with only the router and one wireless laptop.

I can't speak to lockup but the rebooting is still there this is after turning DNS Relay off as suggested. The below log can't be normal: ???

I am also having the above wireless restart issue.
Yesterday I setup the 2.4Ghz wirless on "g only" mode and there were no wireless restart the entire day.... In the evening I put it back to "N and G" and the wireless restarts started to occur once againe... >:(
-
It's tough to offer suggestions without seeing your whole config. Can you share your adv wireless settings?
-
all the settings have default values and the following check boxes are enabled
WLAN Partition :
WMM Enable :
Short GI :
-
I spoke too soon.
Dynamic DNS disabled itself today. What a surprise!
-
Some more updates...
After running the router for a day in "G only" mode without any wireless restarts, I changed it back to "N and G mode" and the wireless restarts started happening again.
I then changed the 2.4GHz channel from the 11 to channel 13 that I was using a few months back and since the last 3 days there have been NO wireless restarts..
BUT I noticed when I download at full speed from newsgroups (between 5.9 to 6 MB) the router locks suddenly and I lose connectivity to the internet...
Slowly my http browsing on a wired connection returns to normal but on the wireless connections, I get the timeout errors and the download speeds on my wired computer almost grind to a halt..
A quick reboot of the router and I am back to normal again...
-
That's the thing..... I don't think they really care. What we need to do is find a router that works as advertised, and spread the word.
-
Turning off DNS relay completely cured my router hang.
Good find!

Just found this thread after pulling my hair out for the past few weeks.
We replaced a DIR-825 that died with a new 855, and have been driving ourselves nuts with the freezing issues every few days.
Our network setup is all in the basement and having to power cycle the router every couple of days was driving me nuts.
Just tried this now and will come back to report in a few days if the problem still persists.
thanks!
