hard drive failure
« on: October 06, 2018, 10:37:03 PM »

I've done a quick search but I'm not sure the best search terms to use to find my issue.

I've had the dnr 202L(Current NVR Firmware Version :   v2.03.02 ) for a few years.  It's reading from just one camera, a dcs-5009L (Firmware Version 1.08.11 (2016-12-14) ).  Originally I was using a 500 gig external drive to store my vid captures.  Eventually that drive died and I assumed it was because it was rather old and used.

So, I put in a usb flash drive.  A Kingston 16 gig.

And it just stopped after several months of good functioning. when it died,  I could recognize it with both my windows or Linux machines but I couldn't access nor format it.
I tried a 32 gig Kingston and it did the same thing.  took about 1 month for it to become a brick.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

I have the system set up to record on event.  To do this, I have the camera record always (the other option is to only record at certain times of the day) and then the DNR-202L is set to record on event.  I think it saves the 10 seconds before and after the event starts, stops, respectively.

So maybe I've just been doing it wrong.   Any advice would be appreciated.

ONe thing I just noticed is that even though I save the Dnr 202 to record on event, if I navigate from that page, then back, it goes back to continuous recording.

Link>Welcome!

  • What region are you located?

I recommend trying the FW update and see if your drives behave in the same manor:
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=72744.0

Can you reformat the drives in Windows? They may to be re-initialized before you can reformat them and re-connect to the DNR and have it re-format them...

I'm in the pacific northwest, just north of seattle.

Thanks for your response.  I can see the drive in both linux and windows, but I cannot format them.  I've tried using fdisk in linux but it won't let me write any changes.  Trying gparted too but it won't let me add a partition.

I'll try to do a firm ware upgrade but I don't know how to reinitialize the disk.

Hmm. Now that I've upgraded firmware I can't see my camera image.  IT's still working as I can access it with my phone.  Something about wanting to install activeX controls

Use IE11 or FF ESR v52.9.0.

internet explorer 11 isn't compatiable with my windows 8.1; I'm running firefox 62.0.3; I tried installing an older version but the firefox installer wouldn't do it.
Okay, after getting java back up and running, I'm able to see my camera images via Internet explorer.

I'm still not clear why the dnr 202 seems to be turning my hard drives or flash drives into bricks.  My only thought is that they are being constantly recorded to and that this is damaging them some way.

Sir:
I live in Cairo, Egypt. I got my NDR-202L (FW 2.04.03) and DCS-5029L and 2330-L cameras from Amazon USA. I have the same problems as you. DNR-202L is very poorly supported from D-Link. I use external HDD WD My-Passport 1G, which was working fine but after reformatting it does not record. The Cameras with its built-in SD are working fine. I will try to update with security patch 2.05.01 and let you know.

I'm sorry for the delay in answering this.

I've had two Kingston flashdrives (32 gig and a 16 gig) become unusable.  I've also had a 500 gig external hard drive stop, though I can't remember the brand.  In other words different types of mediums have been 'bricked'.  On Linux, gparted won't read these drives.  On windows using the computer management tool I can see that the kingston drives are in raw format.  But my attempts to format them have failed.

What is the Mfr and model of these drives?

Have you used the Disk Management took under Manage to see if you can re-seat the drive or clear the partition of the drives then re-initialize them?
I would make contact with D-Link support about this.

I just bricked another  one since the start of this thread. My hunch is that the disk gets full and for some reason it doesn’t begin writing over from the beginning. The videos on the flash drive were preserved, I just couldn't make any new ones. I experimented and was able to detect the flash drive in the DNR and so I tried a format through the DNR itself, and it worked.  I'm able to record again.

I tried disk management. That’s one of the tools I’ve tried. Where I can see it’s in raw format. But no other seem to work. In a different case, I use disk management and I can see the flash drive but it says "no media".

You can try this to see if you can revive your drives:

http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/005929en

Its a Seagate site but the instructions will work with any drive.

Can you format your other bricked drives through the UI?

Are you doing any special process before installing it in the DNR-202L?

Are you in the US? If you are please call tech support at 1-877-453-5465 or go to support.dlink.com/DNR-202l and click the chat button on the right. You can cut n paste the link to this thread.
