noob question

ok i know little to nothing about routers, so i need or directed to someone who can help so here goes.
1. what is a host name and do i really need one?
2. how do i input my ip address, Subnet mask to get My WAN online? and
3. will fixing the about problems change my Cable and network staus

Questions that we need answered before we continue:

1) What is your Internet Service Provider (ISP)?
2) What modem/gateway do you use?

When setting up your connection initially, you do not need a host name usually unless you are using a different connection method besides DHCP.
