UPnP, and why so many sequential ports
« on: February 12, 2014, 03:11:52 PM »

We have 6 cameras running at present (2 destined to go to another location) - 4 are DCS-930L, 1-932, 1-931
All are set for ftp upon motion detection, plus one daily email. Setups are as identical as possible.
All of the cameras are pretty much inactive  -  yet, my (NetGear) router's log shows runs of entries like the following, with sequentially increasing numbers, apparently caused when a camera control panel is accessed via web browser to read its' settings:
[LAN access from remote] from MyWANIP:63617 to MyLANIP:port, Wednesday, Feb 12,2014 14:10:30
[LAN access from remote] from MyWANIP:63616 to MyLANIP:port, Wednesday, Feb 12,2014 14:10:29
[LAN access from remote] from MyWANIP:63615 to MyLANIP:port, Wednesday, Feb 12,2014 14:10:29
[LAN access from remote] from MyWANIP:63614 to MyLANIP:port, Wednesday, Feb 12,2014 14:10:29
[LAN access from remote] from MyWANIP:63613 to MyLANIP:port, Wednesday, Feb 12,2014 14:10:29

All cameras are set, in Network Setup/UPnP Settings, for UPnP Enabled, UPnP Port Forwarding Disabled.
The router is set for the port forwarding, but only (the oldest) 4 cameras appear in that UPnP Portmap Table. ...
We are using Mac computers, and iPad, no Windows. What is the function of the UPnP operation?
Does anyone know what may be going on here?

In trying to understand this, I found this link:

<url> http://foscam.us/forum/ftp-server-connection-fails-t7222.html </url>

which advises to turn OFF UPnP when doing Port Forwarding in the router ...

Having changed camera settings per that foscam forum link,
<url> http://foscam.us/forum/ftp-server-connection-fails-t7222.html </url>
that suggested to turn OFF UPnP in the cameras and in the router, as well as using only Active (not Passive mode) FTP, we now see only this kind of thing:

[LAN access from remote] from FTPServerIP:20 to MyCamLANIP:30005, Wednesday, Feb 12,2014 16:52:19
[LAN access from remote] from FTPServerIP:20 to MyCamLANIP:30004, Wednesday, Feb 12,2014 16:52:18
[LAN access from remote] from FTPServerIP:20 to MyCamLANIP:30003, Wednesday, Feb 12,2014 16:52:18
[LAN access from remote] from FTPServerIP:20 to MyCamLANIP:30002, Wednesday, Feb 12,2014 16:52:17
[LAN access from remote] from FTPServerIP:20 to MyCamLANIP:30001, Wednesday, Feb 12,2014 16:52:16

which I interpret to mean that no longer are there extraneous communication between router and camera, only to the server, and the incrementing number is apparently an "ephemeral port" as in:
<url>  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ephemeral_port  </url>

hope this helps somebody.
