I joined the club........
« on: February 04, 2013, 08:00:20 PM »

2 weeks ago I was at Fry's and they had 5 units on the shelf ;D. Couldn't resist since they matched Amazon's price ;) The unit came with FW1.01 installed already, updated the unit to FW 1.03 used a combo of IE  & FF, both worked well, the upgrade went smoothly!!! No hiccups. Configured the unit similar to my DIR-857 and went into the advance tab and saw some extra goodies that I liked very much.

1) Turned off DHCP. Static IP addressing for all clients
2) Originally NO settings for the XBOX, had MOD NAT issues....of course.
*Configured the XBOX settings using QOS and Port forwarding rules.....a shout out to Furry he has
a GREAT sticky on this would have had a hell of a time other wise. Now I have OPEN NAT on           the    XBOX.
3) 2.4 & 5GHZ wireless work WAY better. On the 5ghz I finally have coverage in areas the DIR-857 could not reach at all. Dlinks description of using HIGHER power amps to deliver a better signal is TRUE. Checking with inSSIDer I have my 5ghz set to the highest channel and the amplitude is FAR BETTER than the 857 and stomp my neighbors airport extreme. The 2.4ghz works rock solid even though i have so much 2.4 traffic running at all channels, most congested is CH-6

Thus far I am very pleased with this router, I wanted a better wireless coverage and it delivered , i will have to look at the itunes server setup, looks interesting.

The only negative so far is my 3TB external HDD. The router sees it however it does not give me the link to the Shareport access link....theres no address at all. Anyone else having problems with this?????

Other than that a great router. I like it even better since it is NOT a MIMO router, never liked MIMO, yeah I know the 857 is a MIMO.

On a side note , Furry I will check the 2.4ghz on guest mode on the 857 and post in the 857 forum, after more testing. Thanks  ;D

Here you go!!!!! The DIR-865L sees my Seagate 3TB HDD and when I access the content remotely from my Iphone 5 I can stream my vids and other files as well. BTW the DIR-857 saw the very same 3TB HDD as well

500Gb is what is supported for SharePort officially. Dlink was surprised that my 2Tb drive was accessible on some OSs using SP v4. Newer OS's, not so much.

Can try this  ???

Also FYI, you can capture the actual browser screen by hitting Print Scrn or ALT+Print Scrn to capture a entire screen or window then edit it for size and content in Paint then post to the image server instead of using a camera.   ::)

Or if you have Windows 7, you can use the "snipping tool".

So far this the 865-l has been a rock solid performer, right out of the box. No complaints...except for one!!!

I made side by side comparisons between the 865 VS 857. The wired LAN side on the DIR-857 with FW 1.04 on a speed test was giving me 14Mbit down and 1 up. However, the 865-L(FW 1.03)  is giving me 7.02mbit down and 1up.I lost about half the speed on the NEW 865-L.  Both routers were configured the same on the "wired" side. I wonder if there will be another FW update to address the wired LAN speed....in other words correct it to the proper speed.

Furry have ran any side by side wired  LAN speed test?????? Maybe you can shed some lighton this or anyone else????

BTW I am using Time Warner cable for many moons  ;D

TIA  ;)

Is SPI, Traffic Shaping and QoS enabled in between the 2? I noticed on I think the 865L that SPI was disabled.

I haven't done any side by side LAN speeds tests yet. I have some numbers from when I first got the 857. LAN to LAN was 50-80Mb. WAN to LAN has mostly been 50/2 on the ISP. Varies sometimes here due to time of day, network ISP traffic and such.

Current DIR-657 speedtest.net:

SPI, Traffic Shaping and QOS are on however my server PC speed test with are not in the QoS rule.
ISP is cableone and Motorola SB 6120 modem.

I'll post more results on the 857 and 865L and 826L soon.

So I rechecked all my settings and sure enough everything you listed was enabled. What I neglected to MANUALLY select the transmission rate is now the Traffic Shaping. Traffic shaping was aoutomatic on other Dlink products, but now you have to select the transmission rate and once that was done.......all is good in the world ;D  My LAN speeds are where they should be and fast
